Talking bad about the T-72B3 mod 2016 and T-72B3 mod 2022 since I'm bored 🧵 Image
Well, the vehicle is not good for modern warfare and several things are missing from it but I even understand why the Russians haven't added so much equipment to the vehicle since you needed to correct the Russian deficiency of not having enough vehicles equipped with thermal vision systems and as you need to upgrade many vehicles all of this would be very expensive, But they could have tried harder. In reality, thinking more about money than quality was a stupid decision that help to led to several cases like the one in the image below
Image
I always like to talk about the terrible reverse speed that ALL T-72 series vehicles have, which is only 4km/h, this forces you to show the weakest side of the vehicle to get out of the battlefield and often leads to the destruction of the vehicle.

The Russians tried to "fix" this problem in the new T-72B3 mod 2022 by putting ERA blocks in the back of the hull but that shit just doesn't work anyway, instead To fix the reverse speed problem they chose to put ERA on the back, it's quite understandable when you lose vehicles at an extremely fast speed and need to replace it.
Image
Another problem with the T-72B3 that was minimally "fixed" in the T-72B3 mod 2022 is the poor ERA coverage, here you see an example of an ATGM that hit between the turret's kontakt-5 blocks, Since there is a stupidly large space in that location, the coverage on the sides is also not good as you have weak points in the areas that separate the relikt blocks but this can be fixed a bit by adding 4S22 blocks
The vehicle does not have a thermal or stabilized vision system for the commander, the most it has is a periscope with night vision that does not exceed 500 meters from what I remember, Vision through the periscopes is poor as there aren't many of them in the dome and the vision system occupies the front so situational awareness is horrible.
Image
Unlike the T-90M which has GPS and battlefield management systems, the T-72B3 does not even have a GPS, the only thing the crew can do is use civil systems. GPS is such a basic thing that the fact that vehicles don't have this type of system is ridiculous, no matter how cheap the Russians wanted it to be.
Image
The ammunition/propellants do not have any type of protection and are spread throughout the vehicle, no effort was made to at least create safe sharing with blowout panels for the Extra ammunition like the T-90M Image
An example of how bad the coverage of the T-72B3 mod 2016 is

And about the T-72B3 mod 2022, it is basically a T-72B3 mod 2016 that received more ERA armor, this certainly doesn't help much but it's worth showing. Image

Oshkosh M-ATV

A look at mobility, protection and service in the Ukrainian army. 🧵 Image
in Afghanistan, the USA realized that Humvees, even with structural reinforcements and additional armor, did not provide sufficient protection against IEDs. to solve this problem, the Americans began to use new MRAP-type vehicles, vehicles such as the maxxpro were adopted but they were very large vehicles and despite having excellent protection they were heavy and not very mobile, this led to low mobility in the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan, so in 2008 The Americans began to study another type of more mobile MRAPs
Image
in the end Oshkosh's M-ATV has proven to be the most suitable for American needs and currently 6,000 vehicles have been delivered to the USMC and US army, an unknown number of vehicles have been transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Image

The challenger II was the first western made MBT donated to Ukraine, today I will talk about its capabilities and service in the Ukrainian army. 🧵 Image
I will not go too deep into the history of the vehicle since the focus of this thread would be Ukraine but talking a little about it, the was made by Vickers with a first prototype getting ready in 1988, the vehicle came to pass tests that compared it with the M1A2 and leopard 2 in 1991.

it entered service in 1998 in the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment deployed in Germany, the first emplacement of the vehicle was in the 2000s in the KFOR mission (we will talk about this later) the vehicle looks very similar to the challenger I but share less than 3% of parts (according to Vickers)

if we add the orders from Oman with the orders from the United Kingdom, 446 vehicles have been manufactured to date, which is a low number compared to the leopard 2 or M1, but the challenger has never been an export-focused vehicle.
Image
on 16 January 2023 the UK Defence Secretary announced a package of military aid to Ukraine which among many things included the number of 14 challenger II MBTs that would be the first Western tanks ceded to the Ukrainian government in the war. Image

Are tank battles/encounters rare?

My opinion 🧵 Image
I would like to start with a big NO tank battles/encounters are not rare, videos showing battles between tanks are rare (I'm going to say battles because it's easier)

We do have several records that battles between tanks took place in Ukraine but even so they seem almost non-existent, this is thanks to the small number of videos of these occasions.
Image
Sometimes videos of tank battles are not recorded or are not posted online, we can even see a photo/video of a vehicle that was destroyed in a tank battle but we have no idea about this, example of the vehicle below Image

My opinions on avdiivka and what I have noticed so far 🧵 Image
The Russians started the battle in Avdiivka by throwing several soldiers, vehicles, drones, etc. at the Ukrainians and suffered heavy casualties, but as it was a very large force, the Ukrainians ended up Saturated, which gave room for some advances.

With Ukrainian forces becoming saturated, the 47th mechanized brigade previously deployed to Zaporizhia was deployed to the area to help stop Russian advances.

Why the protection of Western vehicles in Ukraine is so important. 🧵

Image

Image
Imagine the scene, you send your BMP-1 to assault a position full of experienced soldiers along with the crew and they all die, either because they passed through a mine or were hit by an ATGM, Very bad, right? You lost experienced people, now what?

Now you need new soldiers as your soldiers died inside the BMP but as you need people and don't have much time for training You end up giving them extremely quick training, which makes them less effective and leads them to fail in battle more easily than more experienced ones. Image

STRV 122A, the most protected MBT of the Ukrainian war.

(remake) 🧵
Image
Image
as the vehicle is a modification of the leopard 2A5 came armed with the same gun, the L/44 also used in the STRV 121 (leo2A4) but received the modification of the recoil system and can easily receive the L/55 Image
should a new cannon be adopted in the future it would become too heavy for the turret to support so the old hydraulic turret turning system was replaced with a much safer electric system. Image
