🧵staying safe at conference in time of “personal responsibility”

Friend’s partner required to attend conference (no online option) people flying in from all over Aus

We did brainstorming session of all layers of protection, tips, advice we could think of to keep them both safe
Tips:

* get permission to take large hepa filters from home to set up in conf venue
* use portable hepa unit on lap/table in front of them
* wear well fitted, high quality respirator 100% of time
* eat meals outside without exception
* organise house to stay in rather than hotel
* avoid field trip involving bus
* take co2 monitor to be informed in real time of Indoor Air Quality & assess risk
* be on lookout 4 windows/doors that can be opened to ⬆️ ventilation
* update booster beforehand
* regular nasal spray/CPC mouthwash/lozenges to suck on throughout
* be prepared for peer group pressure/questions
* put bag on seat next to you to create distance from others
* take breaks to go outside throughout the day where possible
* bring supply of RATs to offer to others
* bring supply of respirators in case someone else wants one
* contact venue & enquire about ventilation
* sip valve for respirator to allow for safe drinks
* drive to conference rather than fly
* quarantine/isolate after the conference for a few days before returning home
* pull a last minute sickie! 😂
How it went:

* Ventilation reassuringly good
* Partner’s boss ended up masking, in total approx half a dozen masked of several hundred attendees
* Others who masked took them off to eat/give talks, but partner remained masked throughout
* Had to knock back lots of food offered
* Hepas set up at back of room and near speaker, after venue manager had small conniption & needed explanation of what they were
* other attendees remarked masking was sensible (but remained unmasked)
* Partner ate in car during day & skipped dinners, hard to miss socialising
End result

* Partner remained healthy, RAT negative, no symptoms 🥳
* Boss revealed “a lot of people have come down with cvd after the conference, it’s lucky we wore masks” 😬

For the record, it was NOT luck
What we all learned

* It is possible to minimise risk, especially with multiple layers

* It’s much harder to do so individually, would’ve been easier and obviously more effective to protect collectively
* If you attend public events with shared air without protection, you are jeopardising your own health AND that of your loved ones when you get home

* Being informed is powerful; having a group of well informed, like minded friends to collaborate with is priceless 😍
**Please note all advice is from well informed, well intentioned laypeople, not one of us is an expert - these are our personal tips not expert advice

🧵 14 questions for @Mark_Butler_MP ATAGI & CMO Kelly on XBB vaccine advice

1.Why are we out of step with & less protected than the rest of the world?

Are you deliberately infecting the vast majority of Australians this summer just to save money on an extra vaccine dose?
2.Are you so dazzled by the cost cutting excitement of free infection immunity that you can look past the terrible longterm health consequences of a repeated infections strategy?
3.Why did you base yr bold, reassuring assertion that older vaccine formulations continue to provide strong protection against severe disease on evidence that’s now >6 mths old?

Given how much variants have evolved in meantime, yr source is as out of date as the old vaccines

Inspired by @NjbBari3’s observation that masks may be more palatable now b/c it may be “acceptable to have a seasonally appropriate accessory”

Pls share pragmatic advice with friends, fam members, colleagues who may be considering returning to masking this winter Image

Makes a significant difference to interview quality when a journalist is well informed about Covid/long Covid & not running a minimising, disinformation line 🙏 Image

🧵 2 weeks ago, Independent MP Dr Monique Ryan called on govt to urgently review dropping of masks in healthcare in a powerful statement to parliament

This is what she said:

“The Australian Charter of Healthcare gives all Australians the right to safe, high quality healthcare
Our Nat Cab promised to protect the vulnerable from the COVID-19 pandemic. This promise has not been kept

Yesterday Sue Jennings, a constituent from Kooyong & co-founder with Amy Lewis of Cleaner Air Aus, contacted me to express her concern about removal of masks from healthcare
There are no longer any legal requirements for healthcare workers to wear protective masks. All pandemic orders have now expired

Chronically ill, disabled and elderly Australians can avoid restaurants, shops and travel to protect themselves from Covid, but

🧵 8 reasons why WHO disagrees with CMO Kelly’s ludicrous maths (in its own words)

Kelly claims Aus has achieved 99.6% hybrid immunity (stack of posts already disproving this in a myriad of ways)

WHO’s published advice on immunity shows this is incorrect in 8 different ways
1. too many individual factors

“immune protection may differ by vaccine, time since vaccination/infection, variants & host-specific factors eg age & comorbidities”

Hybrid immunity can’t be a population level concept because we are all different & impacted by different factors
2. antibodies levels vary

“amount of antibodies produced in individual due to infection/vaccination & waning over time, determined by multiple factors eg age, variant, severity of infection & vaccine product(s) etc”

Can’t keep track of all this to point of certainty of immunity
