Eyewitness accounts surfacing from Gaza's hospitals are harrowing and disturbing. An entire generation of doctors and health care workers has been targeted in this War on Hospitals. #NotATarget . A 🧵
A painful number of my close friends and colleagues were killed by Israeli strikes. They were not just doctors, but leaders who chose to be in Gaza and build a top notch health care system.
Dr. Medhat Mheisen was the first doctor I met in Gaza - a dentist who believed in what I was doing and made sure I landed on my feet. He took over admin of Wafa Hospital - completely destroyed by Israel in 2014 - because others wouldn't. He was killed in the hospital on Nov 17. Image
Dr. Rafat Lubbad was killed shortly after. He was a titan of internal medicine, a visionary who patiently corrected me in matters of medicine in the ER & strategy outside of it. When he was killed, he was building an international conference of experts to share medical knowledge Image
Dr. Hammam Alloh was killed when he went to check on his family between shifts at Shifa Hospital. He was pure of heart and clear of mind, gearing up for the prime years of his life and building a subspeciality nephrology program. He leaves a wife and three children. Image
Dr. Maisara Al Rayyes found me in the ER when he was a second year medical student because he heard I could teach point of care ultrasound. When he was killed, Maisara was better than me at POCUS. His smile will haunt and comfort me until the day I die. Image
Maisara was killed by an Israeli strike on November 5. His brothers were killed several days later while trying to pull his body from the rubble.
Dima Alhaj was one of my favourites at the WHO office. She always had a secret stash of sweets and alternated between advice on the best food shops and inside-out knowledge of needs of the health system. She was killed with 50 family and community members, including her 6 mo baby Image
These are my stories of some of my friends. Every health care worker killed has a story. Look at them. All of their deaths are stains on our collective consciousness, and very likely meet definitions of war crimes.

Israel has already arrested - and is almost certainly torturing - doctors as well. I know all of the Shifa-based doctors who were arrested very well. They are my close friends and colleagues. Based on Israel's pattern of behaviour, they are being abused as we speak. Image
Part of any genocide is not just killing people, but killing leaders and destroying the future. We must continue our calls for the death and killing to stop. We must also commit to participating in the rebuilding of Gaza once this war ends. Until then, #NotATarget

Today, criminal charges against me were dropped for spraying ketchup to protest Peter Fragiskatos' support for januside. These charges are among a sea of police repression of human rights voices, with physical brutality, arbitrary arrests, and trumped up charges like these. A 🧵
Almost a year ago, on November 15, 2023, a squad of police cars and officers arrested me - six by my count - on suspicion that I sprayed ketchup on MP Fragiskatos' office during a protest to symbolize him having blood on his hands. Spoiler alert: I done it
I suspected and discussed publicly at the time that this was a political decision, and that municipal, provincial, and federal politicians colluded with police forces across the country to shut down protests against Isrralli crimes against Gz and Lb.

Credible reports are emerging LHSC will fire its CEO(s) next week and hire Altaf Stationwala. Don't recognize that name? Stationwala engaged in anti-Palestinian racism when he suspended Dr. Ben Thomson for advocating against dehumanization of Palestinians. A deep dive in this 🧵 Image
I suspect that because Stationwala bungled Dr. Ben Thomson's suspension and put Mackenzie on the hook for potentially millions, that he is now trying to make an exit or is being shown the door. I agree: #FireStationwala . But LHSC?? No thanks. We've had enough CEO scandal here.
Recap: Dr. Ben Thomson was targeted by an organized harassment campaign based on his fact-checking of dehumanizing atrocity propaganda that is now thoroughly debunked. Stationwala suspended him personally. I wrote about it at the time, but there's more now

Western University's Schulich medical school is by now an active supporter of Israel's brutal atrocities in Gaza, which they refuse to condemn. Instead, they condemn and attack students standing against an obvious gen cide, including by promoting people who harm students. A 🧵
The med school and Western are capable of righteous moral outrage. 18 months before the war crimes ramped up in Gaza, they expressed shock and solidarity with Ukraine. They humanized Ukrainians' struggle against Russian occupation, showcasing them in official publications.

In the past 6+ months, not a word of support, outrage or condemnation for 40k+ Palestinians killed: doctors, nurses, medics, patients, and children killed at dizzying rates. None for attacks on ambulances, hospitals, universities, nor for what the ICJ ruled is plausible jenacide

This is a wholly inadequate response that represents an absolute minimum effort. Breakdown of UOttawa's statement and my response. A 🧵
Why on earth was Dr. Kershin allowed to "voluntarily" recuse herself from the process. Why wasn't she immediately terminated? Is she seriously supposed to preside over the academic future of residents who are now admitted with this supposedly fair process?
Does UO believe Dr. Kershin is the only person engaging in this process? I've shown she's part of a larger effort to suppress doctors who advocate for human rights and against genocide. UO is actively choosing not to protect the best learners through faculty's actions & omissions

Dr. Carly Kirshen is a program director for Dermatology at UOttawa. In a message responding to a CBC expose on student harassment, she asked for the list of students. We can assume she intends to use it to screen CaRMS applicants to her program. UOttawa knows and did nothing. Image
Concerned doctors saw these posts and privately wrote to University of Ottawa >2 weeks ago requesting action. Their demands are simple: immediate action to stop abuse of students; accountability; transparency. The university has not yet responded or acknowledged the messages. Image
The University of Ottawa is aware of these letters and has not yet taken any action. Dr. Kirshen remains the PD. She remains in charge of the CaRMS process. UOttawa has not said anything publicly or privately. Not one word in response to the complaint, even to acknowledge them! Image

In my last thread on harassment of students, residents & learners, I mentioned Dr. Olga Shmuilovich deserved her own thread. Her posts (Irony_stop) are egregious and abundant. I organized them into categories: racism, harassment, pro-genocide, atrocity denial, and antivax. A 🧵
I got involved with Dr. Shmuilovich because she was part of a harassment campaign against a medical student even after he was cleared in a thorough investigation. But what I found looking through her timeline was deeply concerning. Image
Here are a few examples of her racist tweets. She appears to subscribe to the "Great replacement" theory and posts virulently racist tweets about any non-whites. I'm keeping it to 4/category for brevity.
