Eyewitness accounts surfacing from Gaza's hospitals are harrowing and disturbing. An entire generation of doctors and health care workers has been targeted in this War on Hospitals. #NotATarget . A 🧵
A painful number of my close friends and colleagues were killed by Israeli strikes. They were not just doctors, but leaders who chose to be in Gaza and build a top notch health care system.
Dr. Medhat Mheisen was the first doctor I met in Gaza - a dentist who believed in what I was doing and made sure I landed on my feet. He took over admin of Wafa Hospital - completely destroyed by Israel in 2014 - because others wouldn't. He was killed in the hospital on Nov 17.
Dr. Rafat Lubbad was killed shortly after. He was a titan of internal medicine, a visionary who patiently corrected me in matters of medicine in the ER & strategy outside of it. When he was killed, he was building an international conference of experts to share medical knowledge
Dr. Hammam Alloh was killed when he went to check on his family between shifts at Shifa Hospital. He was pure of heart and clear of mind, gearing up for the prime years of his life and building a subspeciality nephrology program. He leaves a wife and three children.
Dr. Maisara Al Rayyes found me in the ER when he was a second year medical student because he heard I could teach point of care ultrasound. When he was killed, Maisara was better than me at POCUS. His smile will haunt and comfort me until the day I die.
Maisara was killed by an Israeli strike on November 5. His brothers were killed several days later while trying to pull his body from the rubble.
Dima Alhaj was one of my favourites at the WHO office. She always had a secret stash of sweets and alternated between advice on the best food shops and inside-out knowledge of needs of the health system. She was killed with 50 family and community members, including her 6 mo baby
These are my stories of some of my friends. Every health care worker killed has a story. Look at them. All of their deaths are stains on our collective consciousness, and very likely meet definitions of war crimes.
Israel has already arrested - and is almost certainly torturing - doctors as well. I know all of the Shifa-based doctors who were arrested very well. They are my close friends and colleagues. Based on Israel's pattern of behaviour, they are being abused as we speak.
Part of any genocide is not just killing people, but killing leaders and destroying the future. We must continue our calls for the death and killing to stop. We must also commit to participating in the rebuilding of Gaza once this war ends. Until then, #NotATarget

Today, I will be arrested by police in London, Canada. The police will put me in jail indefinitely because I will not stop protesting against MP Peter Fragiskatos, who refuses to call for a ceasefire against the civilians in Gaza. What's happening. What you can do. A 🧵
The police came to my house to arrest me while I was overseas doing humanitarian relief work. While I don't know the exact charge, it appears to be related to this: cbc.ca/news/canada/lo…
Multiple police cruisers came looking for me multiple times to arrest me over.... ketchup. Yep, we definitely live in the dumbest timeline. But it gets dumber.
We are witnessing in real time and from multiple angles the shelling, bombing and destruction of Gaza's hospitals with the tandem massacre of health care workers, patients and refugees, all of whom thought hospitals were sanctuaries. #NotATarget A 🧵
Israel continues to tell the same lies they've told for two decades to justify these massacres. Never with evidence. Never proven. Multiple international and local organizations have refuted and debunked these lies.
The same people who defended Israel when it bombed Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital and claimed it would never bomb a hospital are now cheering the destruction of every other hospital in the Strip. They defend Israeli attacks on ambulances with pre-arranged patient transfers.
Of course the accusations against Al-Shifa are false. Their purpose is not to put forward credible evidence, but to create a justification for bombing hospitals in Gaza and sowing doubt in the humanity of Palestinians. #NotATarget A 🧵
These accusations are not new. They were made during the 2008/09 war, the 2012 war, and the 2014 war, the latter two of which I was in Gaza for. There has never been any evidence put forward. It's been 15 years. Where's the evidence?
This is not just a question of 'beyond reasonable doubt'. Israel has literally presented no evidence that is accepted by any independent investigators. In the past, they didn't bother presenting evidence at all.
The tragedy at Al Ahli Baptist Hospital is compounded by callous propaganda, dehumanization and gaslighting. More about this story, how I was gaslighted about my own shooting by Israelis and why Israel must stop attacking health care workers and hospitals. #NotATarget A 🧵
The facts as we know them right now are that 471 people were killed in Al Ahli and 314 were injured. 28 patients are in critical condition. These stats will likely shift a bit, which is normal in these situations.
It is almost certain that the Israelis fired the munition that caused these deaths and injuries. However, the dehumanization, propaganda and gaslightling live in the very remote possibility that there is another explanation.
Over the past days, harassment, and attacks on advocates for Palestinian human rights are up. This extends Israel's scorched earth policy in Gaza to all who seek basic rights and justice. How @BenNephrology got suspended, how to help, what to do if you get hit. #NotATarget A 🧵
Dr. Ben Thomson was suspended by @MackenzieHealth over the weekend for his human rights advocacy. Ben is a distinguished academic and physician, doing a masters in humanitarian health. His projects focus on improving capacity in low resource settings such as Uganda and Gaza / WB.
He was fact-checking the debunked lie that Palestinians beheaded 40 babies in their cribs. This lie is based on racism, dehumanizes Palestinians and sets the stage for their genocide in Gaza, which we are watching unfold.
I want to tell you a little story about why you should turn your back on the @NDP right now. Because @theJagmeetSingh , @MaritStiles , and the parties they run have turned their backs on us. A 🧵
Literally one day before the latest war began, I had a conversation with the federal NDP in which I was invited to run for the riding in which I live. This is the same conversation I'm sure @SarahJama_ had when she was invited to run for her riding as MPP.
I asked many questions, but one lingered: Is the NDP ready to support human rights for Palestinians? When I met @theJagmeetSingh , I heard nice words about Palestinians' human rights. But every time action was needed, the NDP failed. Would this change? Could it?
