Recent satellite imagery shows significant progress on China’s 3rd aircraft carrier.

FUJIAN is currently being fitted out & sea trials are expected to start soon.

While still conventionally powered (rather than nuclear), its catapults use a new, advanced electromagnetic system. Image
China launched its third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, on June 17, 2022.

Once operational, it will be considerably more advanced than China’s second carrier, the Shandong, and its first carrier, the Liaoning.
Fujian will feature a “catapult assisted take-off but arrested recovery” launch system that will enable it to launch heavier and larger fixed-wing aircraft. China’s first 2 aircraft carriers rely on less advanced ski jump-style “short take-off, barrier-arrested recovery” systems. Image
China leapfrogged more traditional steam-powered catapults by outfitting the Fujian with an electromagnetic catapult launch system like that featured on the U.S. Navy’s new Gerald R. Ford-class of carriers.

These systems are designed to enable faster takeoffs, increase energy efficiency, and reduce stress on aircraft frames during takeoffs.
The Fujian is larger than its predecessors, which will enable it to support a more robust airwing. It displaces roughly 80,000 tonnes, compared to the Liaoning’s 60,000 tonnes and the Shandong’s 66,000.

The U.S. Navy’s Ford-class carrier displaces 100,000 tonnes. @ChinaPowerCSIS Image
@ChinaPowerCSIS Workers have installed weapons mounts on designated areas of the vessel’s decks, although it is unclear whether the weapons themselves have been installed. These are expected to include close-in weapons systems, short-range air defense missiles, & anti-submarine rocket launchers.
@ChinaPowerCSIS Testing of the catapults on the Chinese aircraft carrier Fujian has begun, @thewarzonewire reports.

Videos and pictures emerged over the weekend showing a red-colored catapult test 'truck' on Fujian's deck.
