🧵Claimed words by IDF spokesman Hagari: “The emphasis is on damage and not on accuracy” have been falsely quoted worldwide as proof that Israel bombs Gaza indiscriminately, part of a campaign to claim genocidal intent. HonestReporting investigated; read for detail: 1/
This 9 word snippet, offered without any context, like all Israeli “quotes” claiming to prove war crimes, were widely reported, often with extra unproven embellishment (“abandons precision bombing”) further misrepresenting what Hagari actually said and meant. 2/
Washington Post later used quote as its centerpiece evidence of the same charge, that Israel is not really trying to minimize civilian casualties. WP links to the same Oct 10 Guardian article that does not cite a source. @ishaantharoor did not bother to check its accuracy. 3/
Quote also featured in an HRW report charging Israel with “Mass Atrocities,” by groups like B’tselem (who further lies saying Hagari "stressed" this point) and voices like @mehdirhasan @OwenJones84 and many more. It is an inaccurate quote by Hagari & grossly misrepresented. 4/
Where did this quote originate? It was first reported in Haaretz on Oct 10 by @Eden_solomon1 & Yaniv Kobowitz, words in Hebrew highlighted below. The words do mean "The emphasis is on damage and not on accuracy" But Hagari DID NOT exactly say this & the context is missing. 5/
The original source is an operational briefing by Hagari in Hebrew to military reporters on Oct 10. HonestReporting obtained the transcript comprising ~2,000 words. The entire section of Hagari’s original words are shown below. The relevant words are underlined. 6/
First, Haaretz abandoned rule of quotes which should show words exactly as spoken, instead they paraphrased & shortened but still put them in quotes. World media did not bother to check. Here is the ACTUAL quote with Google translation, matching HonestReporting’s translation. 7/
What did Hagari mean? Key section he said is translated below. HonestReporting explains: “It was said in the context of the spokesperson’s remarks on Israel’s bombardment of HAMAS TARGETS in Gaza and the armaments that Israel had at its disposal to complete this task.” 8/
Hagari speaks ONLY about terrorist targets and strategy of specific armaments to destroy these targets. He says IDF "right now" focused on weaponry to maximize damage to “terrorist organizations” assets. NOT on all of Gaza or randomly dropping bombs. 9/ honestreporting.com/questionable-h…
Media dishonestly paraphrased a few words out of 2,000 spoken, grossly out of context and its clear meaning to fabricate isolated "quote" to claim Israel is randomly bombing Gaza for maximum damage and abandoning the idea of accurately hitting any target of any kind. END

🧵Media falsely claim 500 trucks/day entered Gaza before war but now 140 during truce & less prior. But it's all grossly misrepresented to imply a humanitarian crisis. In fact, number of truckloads of food medicine & humanitarian items are similar to before war. Here's truth: 1/
UN publishes truckload entries into Gaza via Israel & Egypt. In 2021 106,000 truckloads entered and 79,000 though Aug 2023, was on pace for 118,000. Here is the chart for the last 15 years. So that's 290/day in 2022 and 323/day in 2023 NOT 500. 2/ ochaopt.org/data/crossings…
Notably, media are now inflating truckloads that entered Gaza prior to war; before this the constant importation of goods into Gaza via Egypt & Israel was obfuscated to pretend Gaza was suffering with not enough food & water -- all lies. 3/
🧵A long thread worth your time to debunk Israel genocide in Gaza. Claims of genocide often rely on analysis by Raz Segal as an "expert” on genocide. Analysis of his work and a group of recycled quotes by Israeli officials, now used by the media, shows it's all fabrication. 1/
Notably, Segal published his claim on Oct 13 only days after Hamas atrocities with <2,000 Gazan deaths. Segal already decided he was going to charge Israel with genocide before the bodies were all pulled from Be'eri. His arguments are easily debunked. 2/ jewishcurrents.org/a-textbook-cas…
On Nov 20 Segal spoke with Owen Jones making the same case for "textbook" genocide but ALL his "evidence" of genocidal intent by Israel is falsified or misrepresented, blatant academic dishonestly. Both the article & video interview will be debunked. 3/
🧵Here is a compilation of evidence showing Hamas using mosques, schools, homes etc. for military use. All Hamas war crimes. This is why there is wide destruction & collateral damage in Gaza. Only defense Hamas apologists have left is to claim these are all fake. 20 examples: 1/
Mosque in Zeitoun neighborhood: Tunnel, weapons and drone lab. 2/
Al-Karmel Secondary Boys School: Weapons and Hamas equipment. Here’s an image of the school in better times. 3/
🧵What does int'l law say about hospitals & loss of immunity as protected site? How much “military use” is needed for protection to be lost? In fact ANY military use direct or indirect, removes immunity. What IDF found removes Shifa's protected status. 1/
Hospitals during war are covered in several places in Geneva. IV Article 19 says the “protection… hospitals are entitled” shall cease if they are used for “acts harmful to the enemy.” Geneva authors were smart -- they would not let the enemy gain immunity in hospitals. 2/
Protocol I Article 13 reiterates point. What are “acts harmful to the enemy”? We can look to the official commentary that is part of the Geneva documentation & similar analysis. Even as little as using the hospital as an “observation post” REMOVES the hospital’s protection. 3/
🧵Idea that Israel has no right to self defense against Hamas because Gaza is occupied as UN's @FranceskAlbs claims is inane based on common sense but also based on legal document cited for this claim. A key clause contradicts her ugly & egregious lie: 1/
First, notion that Gaza is occupied is baseless and also relies on fabricated int'l law applied to Israel alone. But for this discussion let's assume Gaza is occupied. So with this in hand Albanese & others look to an Int'l Court of Justice (ICJ) Advisory Opinion from 2004. 2/
ICJ opinion is "Legal Consequences of the Construction of a Wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory" about separation barrier. Importantly it is an ADVISORY OPINION not codified int'l law. So right away it is not actual law, but let's say it is. 3/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_Con…
🧵Hypocrisy of so many who obsess over Israel/Gaza, pour outrage with passion ONLY against Israel can be exposed by looking at 6 conflicts killing & displacing millions. Same people do not care. Why do you think that is? (I know). Here they are, all articles are Oct/Nov 23: 1/
Pakistan is expelling ~1.7 MILLION Afghanis “because of unwillingness of the Taliban... to act against militants using Afghanistan to carry out attacks in Pakistan.” “A large number have been present since the 1979 invasion.” No trucks of int’l aid for Afghanis, only Gazans. 2/
Turkey has been bombing Kurdish Syria & Iraq for years 6,000 airstrikes since 2018, 665 this year through June consistently killing civilians, headline after headline. @mehdirhasan when will see pointed monologues against NATO member Turkey's war crimes? 3/
