As with all of these ‘outside the box’ treatments, there’s limited published evidence yet, but there is some rationale as to why it might help Long Covid symptoms - arguably best used as part of a combination approach.

Proponents say it helps ‘reset the nervous & immune systems’. Hard claims to establish but I did feel better afterwards!
There are several different types of cryotherapy, varying in the manner of cooling, temperatures used and amount of body immersed - we don’t yet have much steer on which might be best for long haulers.

The problem with the term ‘fatigue’ in Long Covid, and the hunt for a solution 🧵
Any term used to describe tiredness or lack of energy in healthy people falls spectacularly short of accurately capturing the crushing nature of the symptom in LC.
1/8
Even the word ‘symptom’ to describe the experience seems reductive, as when it hits, it swamps and obliterates any other possible function.
2/8
‘Fatigue’ frequently appears no.1 in LC lists, both for frequency & its massive impact - but it gives those who haven’t experienced it a faulty impression of severity, as well as failing to accurately describe its essence.
3/8
A simple graphic representation of why pacing is key in LC (oh, hi there autonomic malfunction!).
In the old days, my HR would return to 60ish within 5 mins of a hard 5k race.
Now look at this (note horizontal axis contains 4hrs of data)
1/3
There’s an hour of pottering about in the middle (either side of the underestimated 115 peak).
At the red arrow I lie down. There’s a bit of a step (good), but it takes a full hr of breathwork to even get back to 70. And as soon as I stand up to take the pic it’s 90+ again.
2/3
Now let’s assume I’d pottered for half the time, how long would it have taken to recover to resting HR? I reckon 15 mins or less. Then I could have got up and finished the job.
This is why pacing and *breaking activities up* is so important for your nervous system in LC.
3/3
Lots of presentations on important subjects in LC - there’s at least one on every day I want to tune in for.
My presentation (about the current treatment landscape for LC) is on day 5.

All sessions are free to watch live during the summit, but if you want an all access pass with all the presentations on demand (forever) as well as all the transcripts, that costs $97 (about £80).
Now that The Long Covid Handbook is out in the world I‘ve decided that my only job is to ‘get better’.
Reinfection in Feb sent me back to square one, and I’ve got to do the hard work all over again, and not just keep pushing on through.

So each day this wk I’m going to describe a stage of my new plan - things which have either helped in the past, or I’m hoping will help now - with a view to compounding incremental improvements, rather than ‘wasting them’ by repeatedly falling into old patterns.
