At the request of numerous commenters on the channel, I thought it was worth covering the (massive) subjects of MCAS and dysautonomia - and the complex interaction between the two.

Hard to squeeze it into a short vid but here goes!

1/4 🧵

It seems like lots of long haulers are wrestling with the Venn diagram of symptoms for the two conditions, which have a huge amount of overlap.

So how do you work out which you’re suffering from?

And how do you avoid triggering them?

A lot of commotion over whether Noah Lyles should have run the Olympic 200m final last night whilst having Covid. 🧵

It’s easy to get cross with him for being irresponsible, and risking fellow athletes’ health & subsq races, BUT…

1/7bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics… It’s probably unreasonable to blame someone for not following guidelines/rules that don’t exist - especially when the stakes are so high and it’s potentially a once in a lifetime opportunity.

My beef with this is with govts generally and the IOC for not talking about it.

Step 3 of the 5 point plan: CRYOTHERAPY.

What exactly is it? You step inside this chamber for 2 mins whilst liquid nitrogen is vaporised inside, dropping the temperature to -150C.

Originally designed for sports recovery, may have benefits in treating Long Covid.

1/5 Image I used the Icequeen chamber at , shortly after an HBOT session.

For the rest of the afternoon I felt - dare I say it - almost ‘normal’. Yes - really!

Like HBOT, a run of multiple sessions likely required to make any more sustained difference.

The problem with the term ‘fatigue’ in Long Covid, and the hunt for a solution 🧵

Any term used to describe tiredness or lack of energy in healthy people falls spectacularly short of accurately capturing the crushing nature of the symptom in LC.

1/8
Even the word ‘symptom’ to describe the experience seems reductive, as when it hits, it swamps and obliterates any other possible function.

A simple graphic representation of why pacing is key in LC (oh, hi there autonomic malfunction!).

In the old days, my HR would return to 60ish within 5 mins of a hard 5k race.

Now look at this (note horizontal axis contains 4hrs of data)

1/3 There’s an hour of pottering about in the middle (either side of the underestimated 115 peak).

At the red arrow I lie down. There’s a bit of a step (good), but it takes a full hr of breathwork to even get back to 70. And as soon as I stand up to take the pic it’s 90+ again.

New film! Discussing the latest evidence for - and challenges of establishing - viral persistence in Long Covid.

Film is an extract from a presentation for the (free) Overcoming Long Haul & CFS Summit, which starts tomorrow.

Lots of presentations on important subjects in LC - there’s at least one on every day I want to tune in for.

My presentation (about the current treatment landscape for LC) is on day 5.

Now that The Long Covid Handbook is out in the world I‘ve decided that my only job is to ‘get better’.

Reinfection in Feb sent me back to square one, and I’ve got to do the hard work all over again, and not just keep pushing on through.

1/4
So each day this wk I’m going to describe a stage of my new plan - things which have either helped in the past, or I’m hoping will help now - with a view to compounding incremental improvements, rather than ‘wasting them’ by repeatedly falling into old patterns.
