Thread: Empathy and IITs/IIMs/Central Universities: Empathy is a missing factor across Indian Academic Institutions. While law and policies forced public institutions to have students from marginalised communities, these students drop out and some commit suicide. Some data:
1. In the last 5 years, the total drop outs belonging to OBC, Dalit and Adivasi communities is as follows:
IIMs: 442 student dropouts.
IITs : 3,542 students,
Central Universities: 9,642 students dropped out.

2. Even for those joining these elite institutions, life isn’t easy. A survey released in 2023 suggested that 45% IIT Delhi respondents agreed students use casteist slurs; 20% of students felt that “casteism inside IIT is more prevalent than outside IIT”.
3. Despite good CGPA, some are weeded out at placements. Complaints from IIT Kanpur, IIT Patna etc. suggest that Tata JLR, Navi Tech, Merilytics and Niva Bupa Ins. asked students to fill their CRL rank of JEE Advanced in their pre-placement forms with no option for category ranks Image
4. A student wrote “I am afraid that if I mention anywhere that I don't have a CRL rank but a category rank, they won't select me for further process. I have worked hard and have a CGPA of 7.9

5. Law is are flouted without fear. IIT Bombay denied 80 seats to SC, ST, OBC students and admitted 95 more general category students in PhD admission 2023. Five departments in IIT Bombay have not admitted a single ST candidate in the last 8 years

6. The lack of empathy, discrimination, name calling, bias, slurs also lead to fatal consequences. Between 2014-2021, of the total 122 suicides in these institutions, 78 are from SC/ST/OBC communities.

We need to ensure diversity in campuses - Rich and poor, socially backward and forward, minority and majority, gender participation. Choose universities with greater diversity so that your children will turn out as good humans with compassion and empathy.

Thread: NLUs and NRIs:
1. This is about NRI quota abuse in Law School admissions. Unlike in MBBS, where it is limited to Private Universities, in the case of LLB, the abuse is in the publicly owned NLUs. In all, 56,572 students appeared in CLAT exam for admission in 22 NLUs.
2. In NLU Raipur, a candidate who scored just 9 marks out of a possible 150 marks, a rank of 40012 was able to get admission under NRI quota. The SC closing rank was 7137, ST closing rank was 11,277 and OBC closing rank was 2061. For general quota, the closing rank was 805.
3. At NLU Lucknow, a NRI candidate with 37492 rank, who scored only 10 marks out of 150 in CLAT got a seat. The closing cut-off rank was 9582 for an SC student, 27764 for an ST student and 3088 for an OBC candidate. For general category, the closing rank was 749.

Thread - NRI Sponsored Students and Meritocracy:
1. This year, the NEET qualification across categories was for General Category: 137/720 or 19% marks
and for SC/ST it was 107/720 marks or 15% marks.
2. The real issue is the NRI sponsored seats generally grabbed by students residing in India but pay the fees in dollars.
3. In BV Medical College, Sangli a candidate with a NEET rank of 1110592 (NEET score of just 121 or 17%) secured an NRI seat. paying an annual fee of Rs 72,56,200 (3.6 crores for 5 years) against the normal fees of 21.03 lacs per annum (1.05 crores for 5 years).

This is the story of another IIM, a new one at that!
NITIE Mumbai is one of the best premier B-Schools in India. Even though it wasn’t an IIM, it charged half the fees of IIMs, Got better students and boasted better placements than most IIMs too.
1. On the 16thof August 2023, The government of India rechristened NITIE Mumbai into IIM Mumbai. The name board changed and India established its 21st IIM. The story begins here. Image
2. The lower fees ensured NITIE had greater diversity. NITIE had a total of 1011 students of which 31% are girls, 85(8.4%) from EWS; 513(51%) from marginalized communities, 61(6%) received full fee reimbursement. NITIE’s median salary was 31 lacs with a 100% placement record. Image

Thread: These insults are from an era before the English language got boiled down to 4-letter words. Insults then, had some class!
1. "I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; Bring a friend, if you have one." ~ George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill.

"Cannot possibly attend first night, I will attend the second...If there is one". ~ Winston Churchill, in response.
2. A member of Parliament to Disraeli: "Sir, you will either die on the gallows, or of some unspeakable disease."
"That depends, Sir," said Disraeli, "whether I embrace your policies or your mistress."

3. "He had delusions of adequacy." ~ Walter Kerr.

1. Thread: The fees charged by IIMs are often justified for the high salaries’ students get at campus placements and availability of education loans. However, the shenanigans that are hidden behind the campus placement data needed a deep dive and Careers360 did exactly that.
2. Careers360 compiled the data of 20 IIMs and 9 IITs that offer a PG in Management. The fees and salary were for the batch of 2020-22 ensuring that we calculate the correct ROI.
3. For calculation purposes, we segregated the average salary into two halves – The average salary of the top 50% and the bottom 50%. We also assumed 25% of CTC to be deductions, a 9.5% interest rate on the education loan, and 30% of take-home salary to be the EMI.
