In 1992 I got my break as a writer, hired to work in Norman Lear’s production company. They told me to pay my dues, not show Norman a script nor tell him I was a writer for 1 year. No problem, I was thrilled & happy to pay my dues. Next day Norman introduced himself & said,
“I hear you’re a writer. Have something on my desk tomorrow.”
People ask why I champion beginning writers in which I see talent. Because I was championed by Norman Lear.
I’ll forever carry what he taught me in & out of the writer’s room like, “There’s room in this business for everybody”, “We never learn anything from praise” & “Write the story you want to tell.” He put me on set to learn producing. I hope every Showrunner follows his lead.
That we became personal lifelong friends & never stopped working together is more than I could’ve imagined. I love Norman forever. Through the sadness, my heart bursts with gratitude.
