It is very hard to understand what exactly the COP presidency was thinking today releasing this draft of the key stone Global Stock Take GST text.
Given the positive atmosphere leading up to the release of this text, it feels as if he has set a match to burn 🔥 his own COP Presidency down just as it has begun.

This was the interruption. From a 12 year climate activist from East Timor. It took place roughly an hour before the Presidency’s draft text was released, a text which now looks set to ignite protests across the planet. [I caught the very end of this as she was being hauled away.]

It’s hard to overstate how much this last minute text - supposedly a “take it or leave” version, which cannot be amended will have come as a shock to the 10s of thousands of delegates attending the event here in Dubai.
Notwithstanding the 2000+ Fossil Fuel lobbyists attending, every indication from the Presidency since his unfortunate remarks about “phaseout not being supported by science” had been that he had come to his senses read the room and accepted that it did not accept this nonsense.
Then now we find that this display of urbane sensible diplomacy was all a charade. On the very day that @antonioguterres - who is in a sense the overarching boss of all this - arrived for a pep talk.
Clearly I was spectacularly naïve on this front, but also far from alone. I boarded the metro bound for where I am staying when the text dropped. Moments later the reviews came out. All damning. Sultan Al Jaber had said he wants this to finish tomorrow at 11am. This now seems impossible. Unless there is a consensus view to chalk the years work up as a failure, which is impossible to imagine.

And it’s not as if the opposition to this proposed “take it or leave” text is only from the poor nations of the south. THE EU is also horrified. It’s not clear to me where China is yet, but as it votes with the G77 it will likely be on the side of the angry and disappointed majority.
