So, finally, the truth. @NoLabelsOrg has lied about their intentions (more on that below). But now they admit it - they want to force a contingent election. That's the worst way of electing Trump imaginable. Please read this @NBCNews story and this short🧵
We outed this insane plan months ago. They think they can play kingmaker if they win a state or two. They'd use their electors as bargaining chips. (Now it's gotten even crazier, with talk of a "coalition government.")

Responding to us, No Labels denied it up and down. Their "Chief Strategist," @RyanClancyNL, told the NYT this was "a conspiracy theorist's fever dream." nytimes.com/2023/10/24/us/…
On their website, they wrote: “Some of No Labels’ critics have lately been spreading a false rumor that No Labels is actually planning to trigger a contingent election. This isn’t true.” nolabels.org/settingthereco…
Now, thanks to reporting by @VaughnHillyard and @dangallo, we know those were lies. They laid out their plans clearly.

They've got thoughts on what they want in exchange: “'It could be Cabinet posts. It could be a policy concession...the VP position could be part of the discussions. It could be...‘We’re going to build a border wall + not run deficits.’ Any number of things.'" Image
Clancy even mused that when they meet to count the votes on January 6, 2025, House Members could get in on the action: “[They could] say, 'I’m going to need a Cabinet [post]. I’m going to need a judgeship.'"

In the memo, NL claims “the biggest risk factor for another Trump presidency may be Joe Biden’s candidacy.” But NL’s OWN polling proves, yet again, our point: Biden's on track to take enough swing states to win a 2-way race. Trump wins only when a NL candidate enters the race. 2/ Image
The horserace polling is bad for them, so NL resorts to a bogus metric: those “open to voting for a mod independent.” But “openness” has no predictive value, as @amyewalter and others have noted. 3/

Per the NYT: “The group’s CEO, Nancy Jacobson, has told potential donors and allies that the No Labels candidate will be a moderate Republican, according to three people familiar with the conversations." 2/
To be clear, this does not mitigate the No Labels threat. A moderate Republican will still split the anti-Trump coalition, lose badly, and only serve as a spoiler for Trump. 3/ Image

In recent op-eds and TV appearances, the leaders of @NoLabelsOrg have repeatedly claimed that our efforts to convince them not to field a third-party candidate in 2024 is "anti-democratic." This is a quite rich, for a bunch of reasons. 🧵wsj.com/articles/democ…
First, and most importantly, there has not been a threat to American democracy as profound as a second Trump presidency since Appomattox. And as many experts (including NL's allies) have noted, a third-party ticket could return him to office. 2/

Joe Manchin went on TV yesterday and hinted he may run on the @NoLabelsOrg ticket as a third-party candidate for president.

We hope not. He should run for Senate – only he can win as a D in WV. But if he doesn’t, he should NOT run for president. Because he’d lose. BADLY.
