We're nearing the end of 2023, over 22 months of coverage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Ukraine Control Map has been accessed over 27.5 million times, and featured on CNN, Japanese TV news, and even being used at the Pentagon
Here's a thread of important 2023 updates🧵
2/ Along with over 10,000 geolocations, we now track 850 Russian and Ukrainian units of various sizes, and this year expanded to add naval vessels and aircraft.
The addition of many new units this year has been an important milestone, and many more are expected during 2024.
3/ Thanks to @AS_22ws and @PijkerenTb, we added a fortification layer to the Control Map.
One of the key challenges we faced here was to make it lightweight enough not to affect performance or our layers. An important improvement to the map!
4/ Adjustments to the way we have done things - Our previous method of doing geometric shapes worked for a short time, but didn't scale well.
We now operate a point based system for each geolocation, making them much easier for users and back end use. Thanks to @fdov21!
5/ The daily change log updates - another @fdov21 project, a sheet that let's us import things much easier into the map and track previous geolocations. Much more professional than our 2022 log, & allows adjustments on the fly
If you have ideas for more improvements, let us know
6/ Discord - we're part of @projectowlosint, one of the largest OSINT servers. Feel free to join us at
We have more volunteers working on the map now this year, which has really helped with the increased workload. Special thanks to everyone involveddiscord.gg/projectowl
