Recent "genocide" filing by South Africa in ICJ also relies on Gallant quote. Gallant tweeted 92 times since 10/7. Not one post alludes to killing Palestinians, only Hamas. To claim Gallant intended genocide means twisting 5 words & ignoring numerous contrary statements. 2/
Shown below are 20 examples for the record of Gallant making clear Israel is only fighting Hamas. Some specifically note civilians are not a target. This is how Israel demonization works. Misrepresent a quote snippet, ignore huge amounts of contrary evidence, repeat the lie. 3/
Some claim because Gallant also announced siege of Gaza it intended genocide. But sieges are legal under int’l law & Israel is under no obligation to supply Gaza. Of course Israel has facilitated tons of 3rd party aid. So claiming this action intended genocide is also false. 4/ Image
Oct 7: Gallant's first statement came on 10/7 when he said: “Hamas launched a criminal act… he will realize very quickly he made a grave mistake.” There was no reference to Palestinians or that Palestinians made a mistake. Only Hamas. 5/
Oct 7: Later the same day after speaking with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin Gallant said: “The State of Israel will win this war, and Hamas will be held responsible for its actions.” Not Palestinians. Only Hamas will be held responsible. 6/
Oct 8: Gallant posted: “Hamas has become ISIS in Gaza. In this war we are fighting against a murderous terrorist organization… We will fight it as we fight against criminal terrorists, and we will win.” Nothing about Palestinians. 7/
On Oct 9 Gallant announced the legal siege on Gaza, and said “We are fighting human animals and we are acting accordingly.” According to the genocide libelers, Gallant clearly INTENDED TO KILL ALL Palestinians, not just Hamas. Ignoring 3 prior statements & all that followed. 8/
Oct 10: Reacting to words from President Biden Gallant posted: “Israel faced a barbaric attack by Hamas… Today we focus on destroying the “ISIS” of Gaza and defending our citizens. The U.S. stands with us” Nothing about Palestinians. 9/
Oct 12: In meeting with NATO Gallant discussed the “war against Hamas” and that “The IDF will destroy Hamas.” Nothing about Palestinians. 10/
Oct 12: Gallant later posted the same day that we will “Wipe Hamas off the ground - and we will win.” Nothing about Palestinians. 11/
Oct 13: In meeting with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin Gallant said: “We will topple the Hamas regime and make sure that the threat does not exist within our borders.” Nothing about Palestinians. 12/
