Over the past 20 months, I’ve grown my audience by over 160,000 people.
Trust me:
Having a following is the biggest cheat code for your life and business (if you do it right).
If I had to start again, here’re the 10 steps I’d take:
Narrow your focus.
The biggest risk to success is spreading too thin. Try to grow everywhere and you grow nowhere.
Instead:
Commit to one platform. Master it. Become an authority in the space.
Leverage the reputation to diversify later.
Commit to consistency.
There’s a snowball effect to audience building. It takes time to get rolling, but once it does, the results are crazy.
Set a daily and weekly output goal. Make it tough, but not too tough that you quit.
Every word adds up.
Create connections.
Connections are like a catalyst for a creator’s career: It only takes one conversation to spark a reaction.
Reach out to people:
• 2 steps behind (audience)
• Similar level (peers)
• 2 steps ahead (mentors)
Don’t go at it alone.
Overdeliver at every opportunity.
One of the best ways to build an audience is to show you care more than your competition.
Value is the answer. Give away 99% for free. Double down on quality.
Aim for fans, not followers.
Share more stories.
People follow people. They don’t want some crazy polished version of you. They want to hear your mistakes, flaws, fears, desires, and dreams.
Content is abundant.
It’s connection that’s scarce.
Carve your own path.
The problem with social media is it’s algorithm-based: You’re incentivised to sound like everyone else.
But unique creators stand out. This means you must ignore the trap of becoming like everyone else.
Don't follow the crowd, follow your curiosity.
Make content effortless.
The start of writing online sucks. But the more you write, the easier you can make it.
Repurpose your best ideas. Templatize your content. Start systems and refine your routine.
This will give you time to do something WITH your audience: the next step.
Learn in public.
Writing is the fastest way to learn because teaching what you know quickly exposes what you don’t. Share content to help the person you used to be get to where you are now.
Bring your audience along for the ride.
Study copywriting.
Online, you’re in a war for attention. You can have the best ideas in the world, but if you can’t get people to read, they doesn’t mean shit.
Copywriting will help you attract the attention you deserve.
Launch a newsletter.
Email is THE best way to build relationships.
It’s personal. It’s fun. It’s real. So once you have momentum here, start emailing there. This has a flywheel effect on growth.
The best way to compete on social media is to get the hell off it.

Here are the 11 most popular email subject lines I sent during my recent 6 figure launches (swipe for inspiration):
Topical and controversial: Is Elon Musk ruining Twitter?
People love controversial current events. Keep an eye out for what’s happening in the world - even better if it’s in your niche - then use it as the hook to share your idea.
Example: If Donald Trump wins again…
Use a mentor: The day Naval Ravikant slapped me in the face
Build authority by association by using names in your niche. BUT make sure you're the star of the show. People are here for your ideas.
