TODAY: Feds seek 5-years prison for Jan 6 defendant Reed Christensen, accusing him of charging police & saying he's used the "riot to launch a political career. As a candidate for governor of Oregon, Christensen gave numerous interviews in which he.. minimized his conduct.."
This Jan 6 sentencing opens with striking tone, referencing 2024 political environment, from federal prosecutor. In seeking stiff prison sentence for Reed Christensen, she says, “In the climate we’re in.. we would expect Mr Christensen to do everything he did (on Jan 6) and more”
Prosecutor argues Christensen confronted and made contact with series of officers during Jan 6 attack. “He was the aggressor who charged” at police , prosecutor continues
Prosecutor: “He stopped officers from doing their job”… he “lunged at officer”.. “he was the instigator”
Prosecutor argues Christensen of re-writing history through a self-published book. She says Christensen claimed, in his book, he was “just there to wave the flag”
Prosecutor: “He lied”
Prosecutor says Christensen was a “cheerleader for his conduct” during an unsuccessful post -Jan 6 run for Governor of Oregon
Defense had mentioned Christensen is 65 years old with a history of stroke.
Prosecutor pre-butted that defense argument by telling judge that Christensen was healthy and strong enough to combat police amid the mob
Defense arguments are next. Standby
Defense throws some shade at other Jan 6 defendants. He says Christensen ran briefly for governor of Oregon and “self-funded.” Defense tells judge other Jan 6 defendants have raised lots of money, some for “illegitimate purposes”
Defense argues the police line that broke as Christensen confronted officers was eventually “re-established”
He says Christensen was not “looking for a fight”.. and due to his close proximity to front line.. didn’t have a perspective on size of crowd
Defense: “But for January 6th, he’s been exemplary”
Christensen is in orange jail jumpsuit. At a table to the right of Judge Royce Lamberth.
We expect he’ll speak and ask for leniency shortly
Christensen’s brother briefly addresses judge saying, “I know he regrets it. He would not do it again”
Reed Christensen opens his request for leniency to Judge Royce Lamberth with a joke (or a bit of sarcasm). Christensen thanks judge for sending him to pretrial jail…. Helping check an item “off my bucket list”
Christensen, 65, says his post Jan 6 self-published book earned only $50
Christensen says the officers who he saw on Jan 6 “did not assault people”
Then he argues that he did not assault police…. (Despite findings in case)
Christensen says he believes in “law and order”
“I’m not planning on demonstrations after this”
Christensen: “I have no problem obeying the rules of America”
Judge Royce Lamberth says what Christensen did on Jan 6 “was wrong”
“The court must send a message. And can’t let people just walk away”
He acknowledges a prison term for a man of Christensen’s age can be “tough”, but is necessary.
ALERT: Judge sentences Jan 6 defendant Reed Christensen, a one time candidate for governor of Oregon, to 46 months in prison

I’m at the federal appeals court here in Washington for Trump “presidential immunity” arguments… for @CBSMornings
If Trump wants a photo-op today, he’s gonna have some complications. Cameras are prohibited inside court and a horizontal rain is expected thru the day outside
A long line has formed outside the appeals court hearing room on the 5th floor of the federal court house here in DC. This complex has three secured entrances with metal detectors and screenings.
But they've added an additional metal detector outside courtroom itself
There's a large media room on the first floor of courthouse with internal video/audio feeds of the proceedings. It's as large as a big high school classroom. Three long rows of tables to seat a few dozen media members Four large TV screens with feeds
Three years to the day after Jan 6, 2021 … the FBI announces it has captured longtime fugitive Jonathan Pollock
FBI: “The FBI executed three federal arrest warrants early this morning at a ranch in Groveland, Florida in Lake County. The subjects taken into custody are January 6 fugitives Jonathan Daniel Pollock, Olivia Michele Pollock, and Joseph Daniel Hutchinson III”
FBI (more): “The defendants are scheduled to appear in Federal Court in Ocala, Florida on Monday, January 8. No further details concerning their capture are available at this time."
NEW: Donald Trump asks court to consider sanctions against Special Counsel Jack Smith for continuing to file motions & arguments in 2020 election conspiracy criminal case, even as appeal is pending
Trump's defense argues all proceedings in the case should be halted, pending appeal: "The prosecutors have cast these hallowed mandates aside to score cheap political points against President Trump on behalf of the Biden Campaign"
Trump filing (more): "The prosecutors have repeatedly and willfully disregarded the Court’s explicit instructions. Such malignant conduct undermines the integrity of this proceeding and warrants severe sanctions.”
Jack Smith files appeals court argument vs Trump claim of presidential immunity:
“Immunity from criminal prosecution would be particularly dangerous where, as here, the former President is alleged to have engaged in criminal conduct aimed at overturning the results of..election”
Jack Smith filing (more): “A President who unlawfully seeks to retain power through criminal means unchecked by potential criminal prosecution could jeopardize both the Presidency itself and the very foundations of our democratic system of governance.”
Smith warns “presidential immunity” could shield a President who takes bribes .. or “a President who instructs the FBI Director to plant incriminating evidence on a political enemy; a President who orders the National Guard to murder his most prominent critics”
Maine Secretary of State rules Trump ineligible for primary ballot. Ruling is blistering
"Trump’s occasional requests that rioters be peaceful & support law enforcement do not immunize his actions. A brief call to obey the law does not erase conduct over the course of months"
The state's top election official, a Democrat, leans heavily into arguments about Jan 6 & election
"The weight of the evidence makes clear that Mr. Trump was aware of the tinder laid by his multi-month effort to delegitimize a democratic election and then chose to light a match”
Maine Secretary of State: "I am mindful that no Secretary of State has ever deprived a presidential candidate of ballot access based on Section 3 of the 14th amendment. I am also mindful, however, that no presidential candidate has ever before engaged in insurrection"
ALERT: DC federal judges have indefinitely postponed sentencing hearings for TWO MORE Jan 6 defendants, citing Supreme Court decision to review Jan 6 "obstruction of official proceeding" charge
