On February 13, 2020, Shelby Pierson—the intelligence community's top election security official, deputy to Joseph Maguire—advised members of the House Intel Committee that Russia was interfering in the 2020 election in an effort to get Trump re-elected.
Trump chastised Maguire for allowing the briefing, concerned that Democrats might "weaponize" the information against him. On Feb. 20, 2020, Trump replaced Maguire as Acting Director of National Intelligence, appointing Grenell to the role.
