GENOCIDE: PRESENT TENSE
On this day in 1945, the Soviet Union's Red Army liberated the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. The atrocities carried out in Auschwitz, and in other Nazi camps, included mass execution in gas chambers; forced hard labor and perverse human experiments.
1/x 🧵 Image
The anniversary of the camp's liberation is used to commemorate the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust as well as the millions of other minority groups who were targeted during this campaign of genocide.
2/x
Nazi doctors carried out barbaric human experiments on children and adults alike. In one experiment victims were exposed to extreme cold and then thrown into boiling water to investigate reheating. Victims often died as a result or faced lifelong injuries and disfigurement.
3/x
In 1951, the UN Genocide Convention was established to give a definition of the crime of genocide and to prevent it from happening again, following the atrocities carried on by the Nazi Government during WW2.
4/x
Historical analysis must be a tool for analyzing contemporary reality as well. Presenting events as singular exceptions prevents the establishing of the awareness that genocides and crimes against humanity represent still an ongoing reality for countless people in the world.
5/x Image
The definition of genocide in the Convention and the literature on the topic are useful but limiting tools and should never become a checklist: we raise our voices anytime human beings are subjected to systematic violence as a result of power imbalance and colonial dynamics.
6/x
We raise our voices in support and dialogue with the communities witnessing unspeakable crimes. The ongoing genocidal emergencies and warnings from all areas in the world are numerous and often silenced by the media.
7/x
A non-comprehensive list of the deadliest emergencies are the genocide in Palestine, Sudan, CAR and Congo, the planned invasion of Armenia, the crimes against the Kurdish people in Syria and Turkey, the war in Ukraine and the ethnic conflict in Manipur, India.
8/x
In the last 2 months, 22k+ Palestinians fell victim to Israel violence, backed by European and US weapons—a continuation of a history of apartheid since 1948. Gaza, with almost 2 million displaced, faces deliberate bombings targeting journalists, medical staff, and hospitals.
9/x Image
A staggering 95% of the global population facing starvation, around 600,000 people, now resides in Gaza.
10/x
Since mid-April 2023, Sudan's Rapid Support Forces and Sudan Armed Forces engaged in a deadly power struggle, causing thousands of deaths and displacing 4 million +. The conflict includes deliberate attacks on civilians, looting, and mass rape, leading to immense suffering.
11/x Image
Since December 2020, Central African Republic witnessed escalating conflict between rebels and the national army, supported by Russian Wagner Group mercenaries. Grave human rights abuses, particularly against Muslim communities, are widespread.
12/x Image
Médecins Sans Frontiéres @MSF reports that 1.3 million people, over a third of the CAR population, are displaced.
13/x
In 1961, Belgium and the USA complicitly orchestrated the murder of Congo's anti-colonial leader, Patrice Lumumba, installing Mobutu Sese Seko as dictator.
14/x
Currently, Rwanda-backed M23 rebels are massacring Congolese civilians—a result of historical Western and corporate intervention in the DRC. Since 1996, over 6 million Congolese have died, and millions displaced, all to sustain Western exploitation of Congo's resources.

For over 2000 years, Armenians inhabited Syunik in southern Armenia. Azerbaijan, @COP29_AZ host, delegitimized the Armenian historical and legal claim to Nagorno-Karabakh and it now uses similar tactics against Armenia.
16/x Image
Azerbaijan & Turkey aim to gain economic benefits by controlling Syunik, planning to use it as a pipeline corridor. Since 2020, Azerbaijan's incursions into Armenian territory, resulting in the control of 215 square km, have gone unpunished.

The Red Cross estimates that the two earthquakes on February 6, 2023, impacted 26 million people in Turkey and northern Syria. International reliance on Turkey for fair aid distribution to Kurds in northern Syria has been betrayed.
18/x Image
Turkey has a history of persecution & genocide against Kurds since the 1920s involving mass murders, deportations & denial of Kurdish identity. Erdoğan’s 2019 invasion of Afrin and northern Syria led to civilian deaths, displacements & chemical warfare against Kurds.
19/x
On 24 February 2022, after amassing 190,000 troops on Ukraine’s border, Russia began its war of aggression into Ukraine.
20/x
During the past year, Russia has indiscriminately and intentionally targeted civilian housing, apartment buildings, shopping centers, healthcare facilities, and other areas where civilian non-combatants have taken refuge.
21/x Image
Russia’s policy is “Urbicide” – the destruction of whole cities to destroy a significant part of the Ukrainian national group. 1.6 million Ukrainians have been forcibly deported to Russia by the Russian Army & 7 million are internally displaced in Ukraine. This is genocide.
22/x
Manipur, one of India’s northeastern states, has witnessed violent ethnic conflict between the majority Meitei community and the minority tribal Kuki community for the past five months. The deadly clashes have left over 200 people dead and over 70,000 displaced.
23/x Image
The state is completely segregated along ethnic lines. Members of both communities are crammed into overcrowded relief camps. Scarcity of basic resources and medical supplies in these camps has turned the conflict into a humanitarian crisis.
24/x
Scientist Rebellion stands up for international human rights and the dignity of all peoples. There cannot be a fight for the future and the climate if it is not first and foremost a fight for human rights and lives.
25/x
Today, we commemorate the horrifying crimes of the Nazis against Jewish people and we call out strong the genocidal governments of today.

It's been a week since #ColineFay, a French environmentalist, was arrested in Senegal. We still don't know if her rights are being respected. The reason? Taking part in a peaceful demonstration in favor of @SonkoOfficiel, an opponent of the Senegalese regime. #FreeColine (1/7) Image
She faces life imprisonment. The charges? "Association with terrorists; complicity against the authority of the state, acts or maneuvers of a nature to compromise the security of the state". (2/7)
The protest attended by Coline defended Sonko's right to stand for election and denounced the criminalization of his political party, Pastef, and it was held in defense of democracy and justice in Senegal and of social and environmental struggles, which Pastef defends. (3/7)

Scientist Rebellion co-founder and human rights activist Mike Lynch-White sentenced to 27 months today for peacefully disrupting production of military components made in the UK and supplied to Israel with @Pal_action

1/7 Image
Mike has already spent almost three months on remand for another protest with the climate group Burning Pink, and he might face a further custodial sentence for his involvement in the group Heathrow Pause. The trial related to this protest will take place in June.

The justice system serves the interests of the powerful by imprisoning the peaceful, brave people who stand up to injustice. This sentence follows one given to Morgan and Marcus, two activists from Just Stop Oil, of 3 years and 2 years and 7 months respectively.
