Thread tracking Rep Bowman in this election year
What was he starstruck by? Finkelstein's book "The Holocaust Industry" whose talking points every antisemite knows by heart?
Bowman has one of the largest Jewish constituencies in America, with over 200,000 Jews, many of whom have family in Israel, in his district. He knows he is unpopular with them.

Last night, the IDF rescued two hostages.

This is what Bowman wrote an hour after it was announced. Image
Not content to do 9/11 conspiracies, Rep. Bowman also engages in mass rape denial following Hamas's invasion of Israeli towns. Does he know how many of his constituents have family in Israel and heard it first hand from survivors? I think he will find out

First polling I've seen of Bowman's primary. Hint: this is really bad for Bowman
No adjustment to Bowman's campaign. He is telling voters to associate him with the squad and his opposition to Israel. I'm sure if he loses there will be no reflection on campaign strategy, just that nefarious AIPAC which right now is a "paper tiger."

Lots of leftists will have their narrative about what cost Bowman his primary (hint: Jewish money) but if he actually loses it will be because he is running a bad campaign and his opponent is running a good one.

Iran directly fired ballistic missiles and drones at Israeli population centers. Today Congress is condemning that attack. Bowman voted against it. Voters in NY-16 should be aware that their representative sides with America's enemies.
When the write ups for Bowman's primary are made, leftists will fixate on money, but they'll never acknowledge Bowman's complete disinterest in talking to Jewish constituents who disagree with him, and how that takes him to stupid places.
Bowman hosts a fundraiser outside of his district with a CAIR leader who praised Hamas's mass murder on October 7. This is an easy self-own to avoid, but it seems clear that Bowman wants to be associated with such people.
Latimer picks up another Democratic club endorsement. This follows the endorsements from Democratic committees from Eastchester, Rye City, Rye Town, White Plains, Pelham, Mamaroneck, Harrison, Scarsdale, Greenburgh, Yonkers and Mount Vernon.

Bowman's love of conspiracy theories apparently continues to the present day.
Bowman plays coy about whether Israel should continue to exist as a Jewish majority state. This will surely play well with his Jewish constituents.
Bowman deploys classic antisemitic stereotypes to talk about the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC and its role in Congress. This will do wonders to correct the impression that he believes antisemitic conspiracies.
Latimer racks up more endorsements from Democrats, this time in Bowman's home turf.
Bowman previously opposed BDS.

Struggling with Jewish voters ahead of a heated primary, he opts to endorse BDS to secure support from a socialist party.

Bowman says October 7 was a provoked attack because Israel is an "apartheid" state. Messaging designed to antagonize Jewish voters.
Independent polling shows Latimer continues to lead over Bowman, though with a large chunk of undecided remaining.
Hillary Clinton, who enjoys strong support in Westchester and has a residence there, endorses Latimer over Bowman.
Bowman continues to double down on antisemitic tropes ahead of his primary.
Latimer continues to rack up endorsements, this time from the leader of the NY State Democratic party
Bowman is giving up on trying to persuade voters he has alienated and is focusing instead on a turnout strategy designed to increase youth turnout.
Good summary in @J_Insider on how thoroughly Bowman has alienated his Jewish constituents
jewishinsider.com/2024/06/rep-ja…
@J_Insider With early voting already underway, Bowman finally apologizes for denying that Hamas systematically raped Israeli women and calling that propaganda. Probably would have been wiser to do this sooner.

Jews in NY-16 are mobilizing the community to get out and vote.

"People feel like antisemitism is on the ballot and they feel like, for the first time, we are a community at risk.”
Bowman has a GOTV rally a week into voting being underway. It was on Shabbat when many of his more religious Jewish constituents wouldn't be able to view it.

It was... interesting.

For no particular reason, a thread of American politicians the Turkish government has tried to influence lawfully and covertly.
1) Eliot Engel, Jamaal Bowman's predecessor, was a vocal critic of Turkey’s policies, particularly on issues like the Armenian Genocide and Turkey’s conduct in Syria's civil war.

Bowman wasn't. Turkish affiliated groups donated tens of thousands of dollars to him. Image
2) A critic of the Turkish President Erdogan's government resides in the U.S. Erdogan wanted him extradited. Turkey sought to plant evidence on said critic and sent unregistered agents to the U.S., to do it. Some have been arrested.

Trump ally Mike Flynn was implicated. Image

Couple of comments on Edelstein and Russian-speaking Jewish politics in Israel to supplement this reading in an incoming thread.
1) For the unfamiliar, Edelstein was a prominent otkaznik ("refusenik") from Soviet Ukraine. For the crime of being a Jew who wanted to reclaim his culture and his ties to the Jewish people, he was sent to the Gulag. Image
2) Among the prominent otkazniki who ended up in Israel, Edelstein is the only one left who is still relevant in electoral politics.

Others are in the periphery of the political sphere, getting political appointments to non-political agencies, writing books, or are retired.

It's very difficult to parse the debate about the Philadelphi corridor. It's clear Hamas wants Israel out so they can renew smuggling weapons into the strip. It's also clear Israel's public and security establishment don't trust Netanyahu to negotiate for the hostages.
The messaging coming out of Israel's security establishment is that Netanyahu included Philadelphi in the negotiations to stall the talks. Probably has truth to it.

What I struggle with is their claim, repeated by Gallant in multiple forums, that they can simply return.
I remain a skeptic that Israel can simply return to Philadelphi. First of all, they paid in blood to take it in the first place. It will come with similar costs in blood to do so.

Secondly, it's not clear that Israel will have the diplomatic room to do so.

How I am thinking about the hostages Hamas executed, the politics around it, and where we go from here. This thread will probably not be short.
A preface: I am hearing from friends who knew the murdered hostages. I am seeing the posts from hostage families.

I will do my best to think critically, but I am no more detached than anyone else in the Jewish world. I may come to view things differently with more time.
1) In moments of tragedy, there is an instinct to start trading blame. It is natural, it is human.

Yet we must remember responsibility for people who are murdered first and foremost lies with those who murdered them.

That is Hamas.

I used to think that the ultra-wealthy were singularly focused on taxes but I'm starting to realize there's a theory of social hierarchy that probably supersedes that for at least some of them.
The return to office policies have very little to do with productivity of workers. But they do make bosses feel more in control of people and let them feel important as they walk around an office.
Disputes with labor organizers won't meaningfully change the compensation c-suite executives get from large companies, but a robust labor union does mean a limit on how much power they have over their workers.

2 million views for this. A brief thread.

1) Soviet archives were released in the 90s. We have confirmation that Julius was a Soviet spy and Ethel was aware of and supported his activities Image
2) It's extremely rich to talk about your outrage over antisemitism. The judge and the prosecutor were both Jewish. This was post-war America, both of them knew exactly what public demonization of Jews led to in Europe.
3) The regime the Rosenbergs were handing nuclear weapons to was one that had already been engaging in systematic antisemitism for years. Let's not pretend they cared about the fate of the Jews when the regime they helped shut down synagogues, shot rabbis, and banned Yiddish.
