Worried about ChatGPT making up fake research papers that don't exist?
Here's a simple trick to make sure it doesn't.
This will take you only two minutes. And it works with ChatGPT 3.5.
1. Open ChatGPT and click on your profile photo in the bottom-left corner.
Select "Custom instructions."
In the first box, write "I am an academic researcher."
In the second box, write "Any claims and opinions you cite must be supported with references to published sources. Do not make up any sources. If you don't know a source, simply tell me that you don't know any relevant sources."
Then click on "Save."
2. Now when you ask ChatGPT any question, it will give only give you published sources.
I asked ChatGPT to give me the titles of five books by David Damrosch.
It gave me four books and an edited volume in which Damrosch has an essay.
