1/ A blanket of silence has descended in the Russian media around the fate of the corvette Ivanovets, sunk by Ukrainian sea drones on 1 February 2024. 32 members of the crew are unofficially reported to have survived the ship's sinking. ⬇️
2/ The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel has published a chronology and location of the attack which matches very well with an impressive OSINT analysis derived from star positions published by @Dmojavensis (see below).
3/ According to the channel: "The 56-meter-long vessel was caught in a trap 9 km from the entrance to Lake Donuzlav, near the village of Okunivka, Black Sea region." [Map below is by @Dmojavensis] Image
4/ "The first attack by an unmanned boat on the ship occurred at 03.42, the second at 03.44 and the third control attack occurred at 03.47. According to internal data, at 04.00 the crew stopped fighting for the survivability of the vessel and began evacuation.
5/ "And at 04.46 the ship sank. According to official data, the crew of 32 people was evacuated, one of the seriously injured members was hospitalised. At the same time, the full-time crew number is 39 people."
6/ The official Russian state media has been completely silent about the attack, as 'We can explain' notes. However, Russian bloggers have been critical of the Russian military for taking what they regard as a wasteful approach towards the use of naval assets in the Black Sea.
7/ Two Majors notes the loss of the Ivanovets and corroborates VChK-OGPU's report: "the sailors bravely fought with many enemy [Unmanned Surface Vessels] and continued to fight for the survivability of the boat even after one of the drones was blown up close to the side."
8/ Like several other bloggers, Rybar thinks the Ivanovets shouldn't have been there. It blames "the human factor, when the thinking of certain responsible persons remained exactly at the same level as before the [Special Military Operation].
9/ "And if this continues over and over again after all similar episodes, then is it worth asking a question about the conclusions drawn?"
10/ Military Informant suggests that the huge explosion seen in the Ukrainian video of the attack was caused by the detonation of at least one of the ship's P-270 Moskit anti-ship missiles (which is very likely correct). He questions the thinking behind the ship's deployment.
11/ "A big question also arises about the feasibility of having relatively small boats of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the current situation with a full set of anti-ship weapons on board, …
12/ "… taking into account the colossal and more than once demonstrated threat of USVs, as well as the lack of actual targets for such weapons."
13/ The pro-Russian military expert Vladislav Shurygin queries the apparent lack of defences or detection of the USVs: "How were Ukrainian naval drones able to break into Donuzlav, given that the width of the passage into the lake is less than 400 meters?"
14/ "Or was the boat attacked in the outer roadstead [note – this is what actually happened]? But then how did he get ambushed by the USVs? Why weren't they discovered?
15/ "I will not say that the best means of detecting USVs and countering such attacks is air patrolling. It sets my teeth on edge! But after two years of war, neither patrol aircraft nor radar patrol balloons appeared..."
16/ The reason for the official Russian media's silence is not hard to guess, as @ian_matveev comments: "To deny or not notice the explosion of the Novocherkassk would be completely absurd, but an attack somewhere at sea, …
17/ "… for which there is only night video from the enemy, can be ignored. Moreover, most of the crew of the “Ivanovets” were apparently saved, [so] it is easier to hush up the incident." /end

1/ A well-connected Russian Telegram channel claims that an apparent Ukrainian assassination attempt in the Russian city of Engels yesterday failed to kill Major Oleg Stegachev, the crew commander of a Russian Tu-95 strategic bomber. ⬇️ Image
2/ Ukraine's military intelligence service, the HUR, reported the shooting with the strong implication that it was the latest in a series of presumably Ukrainian assassination attempts against Russian targets. It did not specify whether he had survived.
3/ The Fighterbomber Telegram channel, which is allegedly run by Russian air force captain Ilya Tumanov, posted this morning: "There are no specifics yet, but the Tu-95 pilot is alive."

1/ Some Russian convicts fighting in Ukraine have been formed into a special forces unit called Storm Gladiator. Although it brings together the best fighters from Storm Z and Storm V units, Storm Gladiator is nonetheless reported to have a survival rate of under 40 percent. Image
2/ Storm Gladiator was reportedly created in September 2022 as Storm Z's "special forces squad". It got its name a year later in honour of the sacked Major General Ivan Popov of the 58th Combined Arms Army, who uses the call sign "Spartak" (Spartacus).
3/ Popov acknowledged them in his farewell message in July 2023 when he greeted "my beloved gladiators". A letter sent by the unit's commander describes it as a "separate special purpose battalion", and other documents call it a “OBSN” (separate special forces battalion).

1/ At least 37 Russian sailors were reportedly killed when the landing ship Novocherkassk was destroyed in December 2023. However, only one has been confirmed dead and the rest are still officially 'missing', leaving relatives without compensation. ⬇️

Image
2/ It was previously reported that at least 77 crew were on board, almost all of whom were either killed or injured by the initial Storm Shadow strike on the ship or the huge explosion that followed about ten minutes later.
3/ The ship was reportedly under repair at the time. A source says it had been used for a couple of months "in different ways, including not for its intended purpose." It was "packed to the brim" with an unspecified secret cargo – allegedly Iranian kamikaze drones.

1/ Corruption is flourishing in the Russian army. Court records show that commanders demand bribes for all kinds of 'services', from keeping troops out of the front line, to allowing them to go to hospital, or even to enable men to avoid punishment for being drunk on duty. ⬇️ Image
2/ Verstka has reviewed the offences listed in over a thousand verdicts in military bribery cases to identify patterns of corruption in the Russian army during the war in Ukraine. While corruption has always been present, it has taken new forms during the war.
3/ It is fairly common for Russian commanders to demand bribes from their men for various 'services'. Pre-war, these included things such as:

🔺 Being allowed to take days off or go on leave
🔺 Undertaking a physical training test (which enables a salary increase)

1/ Vladimir Putin has reportedly built a luxury residence on an estate twice the size of Monaco, on the shore of Lake Ladoga just 31 km (19 miles) from the Finnish border. The @dossier_center has published some remarkable drone images of the complex. ⬇️ Image
2/ The residence – one of several palatial Putin properties around Russia – is located on the shore of Maryalahti Bay, an inlet of Lake Ladoga about 185 km (115 miles) north of St Petersburg. The site has been carved out of the Ladoga Skerries National Park near Kortela.

3/ The complex comprises four groups of buildings known as the "Barn", the "Fisherman's Hut", the "Garden House" and the "Farm", plus a trout farm in the bay. The entire area (coordinates 61°32'12.3"N 30°25'52.7"E) covers about 4 km² (1.5 sq mi). Image

1/ Convicts who have fought for the Russian army in Ukraine say they have been abandoned by the state, left without arms, legs or the compensation they were promised. They say that arbitrary executions of convict soldiers are commonplace and life expectancy is only "hours". ⬇️ Image
2/ Novaya Gazeta Europe has published an interview with former convicts who have returned home after receiving severe injuries in Ukraine. After January 2023, the Wagner Group was no longer allowed to recruit from prisons and the Russian Ministry of Defence took over instead.
3/ Thousands of convicts have been assigned to 'Storm Z' assault units for use in so-called 'meat assaults'. They were given six-month contracts which some have completed, though many thousands appear to have either died or have been too severely injured to continue fighting.
