Today, we remember Yugoslavian Partisan and Communist, Lepa Radic, who was hanged by Nazi troops on this day in 1943, at the age of only seventeen. 🕊️
(1/8) Image
Radic was fifteen when the Nazis invaded Yugoslavia in 1941. Nazi collaborators soon arrested her entire family due to their affiliation with the Yugoslav Partisans; an anti-fascist resistance force based in the mountainous regions of the country.

Fortunately, with the assistance of undercover Partisans, Radic's family managed to escape. She and her sister then chose to join the Partisans themselves.

Radic volunteered to fight against Axis troops during the 'Case White' offensive in 1943, and she served transporting the wounded from the frontline during the intense Battle of Neretva.

However, she was soon captured by SS troops while organizing the rescue of 150 women and children from fascist onslaught. Enduring brutal torture for several days, Radic refused to give up information about the whereabouts of Partisan troops and Communist Party cadres.

Even as the Nazis tied the noose around her neck, offering her a pardon in exchange for betraying her comrades, she defiantly declared, Long live the Communist Party, and partisans! Fight, people, for your freedom! Do not surrender to the evildoers!”

“I will be killed, but there are those who will avenge me! I am not a traitor to my people. Those whom you are asking about will reveal themselves when they have succeeded in wiping out all you evildoers, to the last man.”

In 1951, Radic was posthumously awarded the Order of the People’s Hero. Today, she continues to serve as a shining example of bravery, selflessness, and dedication.

Today, we honour the legacy of Fidel Castro – leader of the Cuban Revolution and first communist President of Cuba. 🇨🇺🕊️

At the age of 26, Fidel led the notorious assault on Moncada barracks, a failed attempt to overthrow the US-backed dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.

During his trial, Fidel made the widely popular speech, "History will absolve me," which brought about his release from prison after only 2 years.

After being exiled to Mexico, Fidel began organising a guerrilla force to topple Batista’s regime.

In 1956, Fidel and 82 volunteers returned to Cuba by yacht. After landing, they were ambushed by helicopter gunfire; and only 12 made it out alive.

Against all odds, these 12 revolutionaries, armed with the support of the Cuban people, grew into an unstoppable force.
