I'm in Emerg today

My PICC line is blocked

Could be the tip has gotten embedded

Could be the sticky antibiotic, Meropenem, has occluded the line

Either way, the Community Care nursing staff are not equipped to deal with it

Emerg is the only option
😒
Community Care could put in an IV so I can continue antibiotics until the PICC issue is sorted

But that requires a Doctor's order

And so far, my family doc has not authorized it

36 hours without antibiotics & counting

Emerg is the only option
😒
My local hospital has PICC in-patient service but does not offer PICC flushes or new PICC placements on an outpatient basis

Emerg is the only option
😒

Hospitals are dangerous

To patients

To Healthcare Workers

To the local Community

To the World
Hospitals are incubators

They create Superbugs

And distribute them

To homes

To LTC

To other Hospitals

Around the world
Take the case of CPE

Dangerous bacteria that kill

Mortality rates up to 50%

Resistant to Carbapenems

Our last line of Antibiotics

4 years ago today I flew home 3 days early from a 7-day vacation in Costa Rica at the invitation of my local MPP to make a 3 minute pitch to the
Finance Minister of Ontario as part of the pre-Budget Submission process.
It was my last international flight before the Pandemic struck.

Why give up my last sunny vacation when I knew COVID was coming?

Because this was too important.
The pitch was to retrofit Ontario Hospitals with AutoUV in bathrooms.

Why hospital bathrooms?

Because everything is shed in stool

Intestinal bacteria & viruses, respiratory viruses like Flu, RSV & SARS2, etc

That's why we do wastewater testing now

Imagine there's a beach in a town where you see a young child and her mother get swept out to sea

You alert the Lifeguard who promptly acknowledges there's a rip tide, closes the beach and sits back down
Stunned at the inaction of the Lifeguard to save mom & her child, you decide to be a hero yourself

You have all the tools

You have training

But the lifeguard won't allow you, or anyone, to go into the water
An hour later the Lifeguard reopens the beach

After all, it's a tourist spot and tourism supports the town

And the Lifeguard works for the town
