BREAKING: Jack Smith just filed his response to Trump asking the SCOTUS to block the DC Court of Appeals & does not mince words: "Trump's criminal scheme to overturn an election & thwart the peaceful transfer of power should be the last place to recognize...absolute immunity."
"Applicant cannot show, as he must to merit a stay, a fair prospect of success...Nor can applicant show the balance of equities or the public interest favors continued delay...Delay in the resolution of these charges threatens...the public interest in a speedy & fair verdict."
Read his full response here. A very strongly argued opposition. Have a feeling that even if the Supreme Court took this up, it wouldn't favor Trump. Jack Smith & the DOJ have a solid case to make.

I need everyone to hear me on this:

A mayor has no control over hurricane-level wind gusts.

100 fire trucks would not have stopped a fire in 100+ MPH winds.

Scientists & firefighters have said the same. End of discussion.

Now is the time we focus on rebuilding.
Exhibit A: Lots of folks are focused on the budget part of the conversations and not on this part of the same interview. Chief Crowley makes clear that even with an additional 100 engines, it would not have caught that fire.
As this former wildfire fighter points out, it is nearly impossible to put out wildfires above a certain speed, because, well, they create their own weather. No person could have controlled that. Nothing would’ve been able to stop that.

For fact’s sake: There was NO $17 million cut to the Los Angeles Fire Department budget this year. In fact, there was a $50 million INCREASE in the Los Angeles Fire Department. Cold, hard facts. Full stop. Period.

The misinformation and disinformation has been insane and angering, finding ways to blame Mayor Bass for things she, quite frankly, never did. @politico reported this yesterday. Mayor Bass did NOT cut funding for LAFD. Any assertion otherwise is untrue & must be called out. Image

I, for one, want to thank President Biden, Governor Newsom, and Mayor Bass for doing everything in their power to contain this fire & help everyone impacted by these fires. It’s not easy. They’re giving it their all. Stop politicizing this. Let’s rebuild & recover together.
I want to thank the firefighters & every organization, restaurant, and person who has stepped up & offered their help and support during this difficult time. I’m in LA, luckily not in the evacuation zone, & I am beyond amazed by how this city is coming together. Let’s continue it
Here is what we should NOT do. 1.) Politicize this. Families are grieving. They’re hurting. They are focused on surviving & rebuilding. Blaming people is not what they want to hear. No one wants to heart it. Focus on what truly matters here — coming together and rebuilding.

Have stayed silent on this, but after today, I can’t. Like her or not, AOC is one of our party’s brightest and best communicators. She’s a generational talent and force. Democrats need to start elevating our best & brightest young people to the spotlight—now. Period.
People like @AOC and @MaxwellFrostFL and all the other young forces & talents shouldn’t be pushed to the sidelines. They should be leading our committees and being relentlessly visible. Democrats need new leadership and fresh voices. People are hungry for it.
@AOC @MaxwellFrostFL The old playbook, run by the same generation of Democrats who have defined us for so, long simply will not cut it. We must not only include young & talented voices, but we must not be afraid to let them be ranking members on committee & take charge. Democrats, please learn ASAP.

This video of Trump promising to block emergency disaster funds to CA because of political vendettas is why Gavin Newsom is calling an emergency session & why every governor with a Blue trifecta must do the same. States are the frontlines of democracy.
Donald Trump, in this video, is standing in California. He calls @GavinNewsom a pejorative name & says he won’t provide him funding in the case of an emergency disaster. We know who Trump is. Now is the time to take action & be proactive before it’s too late.
@GavinNewsom Yesterday, Gavin Newsom spoke on a post-election call & emphasized that he wants to have an open hand, not a closed fist, but that he also wants to be proactive about protecting Californians from the very things that Trump promised to do if president.
