I'm at the Jefferson County Democratic Convention where Democratic nominees are being selected. Why aren't they being elected in a primary, you ask? 🧵 Image
To get on the ballot (as a major party nominee), a candidate must a) submit forms to the party, b) pay a qualifying fee, c) submit forms to the Secretary of State. The deadline for qualifying is 116 days before the primary. (Which was Nov 10, 2023)
The primary is in March in Presidential years, and in June for midterm years (when state legislators, Governor, etc. are elected). When the primary is in March, the qualifying deadline is in November of the previous year. This date difference is important because....
One of the forms that candidates must complete when qualifying (or shortly thereafter) is the Statement of Economic Interest. This includes disclosing your finances from the previous year's taxes. So this time, candidates had to file their 2022 SEI to run in 2024.
In the past, if you didn't file the form, you'd get a reminder letter and turn it in late without penalty. So a number of candidates -all over the state - didn't get the form turned in on time. 😬 Because of that oversight...
In late December the Alabama Ethics Commission refused to certify hundreds of candidates from both parties across the state, including 13 in Jefferson County. The county Probate Judge then announced that disqualified candidates could not appear on the primary ballot.
Since then, all sorts of legal action has been taken to try to get candidates back on the ballot. A few were successful by proving they thought they'd submitted the form. But many were not. Some were incumbents. Some had no competition for the seat- from either party!
But we do have another way to get a Democratic nominee! We can hold a convention and have the party's executive committee choose a nominee. So instead of primary voters choosing, a committee of approx 50 people choose.
The people who were disqualified cannot be selected, so it's new candidates. It's weird and less democratic than anyone would like, but it's allowed within the law and it's better than not having a Democratic nominee!

Want more information about the new Congressional map(s) proposed for Alabama? Let's zoom in closer, shall we? #redistricting #alpolitics This is Map 1.
google.com/maps/d/u/0/vie…
All three maps keep Montgomery wholly in District 2 and remove Autauga and Elmore from District 2 (adding them to D6). All three move Macon & Russell counties (including the city of Tuskegee) from D3 into D2. (Below is Map 2)

All three move Dale, Coffee, Covington, Geneva, and most of Houston county into D1. Map #1 leaves Dothan in D2 but the other two maps move Dothan to D1. Map 1 & 2 leave Henry County in D2 while Map 3 moves Henry into D1. (Below is Map 3)

Curious how it all works? How do Alabama Democrats select delegates to the 2024 Democratic National Convention? I lay it out in this hour-long video, and summarize it in the 🧵below.
via @YouTube
First off...
What's the point of the Democratic National Convention? The Convention happens every 4 years in order to…
- Officially nominate a candidate for president and vice president,
- Adopt a comprehensive party platform, and
- Unify the party.
Who attends the Convention?
Elected delegates from each state (& DC & the territories) who are "pledged" to a particular presidential candidate plus "superdelegates" who represent the Democratic establishment and don't have to pledge support for a particular candidate.

Let's talk for a minute about "Rescission" and what it means for the federal deficit and for CHIP, Hurricane Sandy Relief, and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. businessinsider.com/trump-rescissi…
Republicans are doing this because while claiming to be the party of fiscal responsibility, they passed a $1.3 Trillion spending bill AND a massive tax cut, which together has thrown our deficit into spectacular overdrive.
In a weak effort to show that they are still fiscally conservative, they are touting this $15 Billion budget cut. In case you didn't notice, that "cut" is 1% of the spending they passed. Barely a drop in the bucket.
