1/ The recently-sacked Admiral Viktor Sokolov was reportedly dismissed for ordering the large landing ship Caesar Kunikov to go to sea without a working propulsion system. The Ukrainian sea drone attack on 14 February is said to have ambushed the ship while it was under tow. ⬇️ Image
2/ Sokolov's sacking took place without an official explanation, and there was also no explanation of what the Caesar Kunikov was doing off Alupka in Crimea at the time it was sunk. The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel has published an (unconfirmed) explanation of both occurrences. Image
3/ According to a source quoted by the channel, the Caesar Kunikov had suffered a serious technical malfunction and had left Novorossiysk on the night of 12 February to go to Sevastopol for repairs. It was unable to provide independent propulsion, so it was accompanied by tugs. Image
4/ Sokolov, who was until this week the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, is said to have been well aware of the threat from sea drones (USVs), particularly to a vessel with reduced capabilities, but still issued the order. It resulted in the loss of the ship. Image
5/ According to the source, there were no fatalities during the attack on 14 February – the crew was rescued or evacuated before the ship went down – but a number of them were seriously injured and are "still fighting for their lives."
6/ The large landing ship Novocherkassk was also under repair when it was destroyed at Feodosiya, which is much closer to Novorossiysk. The Caesar Kunikov's voyage to Sevastopol suggests that the ship repair facilities at Feodosiya may be inoperable after that attack. /end Image

1/ More details have emerged about the destruction of the Russian large landing ship Novocherkassk on 26 December 2023. According to a report, the local air defence system was inoperative and could not intercept the two incoming Storm Shadow missiles. ⬇️
2/ Novocherkassk was reportedly under repair in Feodosiya from 17 November. She was due to undergo sea trials on 26 December and was being manned by a crew of up to 90 personnel who were seconded from three other large landing ships – the Yamal, Azov and Nikolai Filchenkov.
3/ Most of the personnel were professional (contracted) sailors, with 14 conscripts also present. Many were reportedly sleeping in cabins at the time of the attack, with the commanders on the navigation bridge. Almost all of those who were sleeping are said to have been killed.

1/ Only three bodies are reported to have been recovered from the wreckage of the large landing ship Novocherkassk, destroyed by a Ukrainian missile strike in the port of Feodosia. The rest of the Russian Black Sea Fleet has reportedly left the port due to its vulnerability. Image
2/ Recent pictures published by the 'Crimean Wind' Telegram channel show the remains of the ship being lifted from the water by a large floating crane. It seems clear that the Novocherkassk was completely demolished by the explosion that sank her. Image
3/ According to the VChK-OGPU Telegram channel, only three remains were recovered but have not been identified due to the effects of the fire, explosion and submersion in water. DNA testing is being carried out.

1/ A blanket of silence has descended in the Russian media around the fate of the corvette Ivanovets, sunk by Ukrainian sea drones on 1 February 2024. 32 members of the crew are unofficially reported to have survived the ship's sinking. ⬇️
2/ The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel has published a chronology and location of the attack which matches very well with an impressive OSINT analysis derived from star positions published by @Dmojavensis (see below).
3/ According to the channel: "The 56-meter-long vessel was caught in a trap 9 km from the entrance to Lake Donuzlav, near the village of Okunivka, Black Sea region." [Map below is by @Dmojavensis] Image

1/ A well-connected Russian Telegram channel claims that an apparent Ukrainian assassination attempt in the Russian city of Engels yesterday failed to kill Major Oleg Stegachev, the crew commander of a Russian Tu-95 strategic bomber. ⬇️ Image
2/ Ukraine's military intelligence service, the HUR, reported the shooting with the strong implication that it was the latest in a series of presumably Ukrainian assassination attempts against Russian targets. It did not specify whether he had survived.
3/ The Fighterbomber Telegram channel, which is allegedly run by Russian air force captain Ilya Tumanov, posted this morning: "There are no specifics yet, but the Tu-95 pilot is alive."

1/ Last week's Ukrainian missile strike on Belbek military airfield in the occupied Crimea reportedly achieved a precise hit on a metal trailer housing a command post. The trailer was completely destroyed, though collateral damage in the vicinity is said to have been minimal. ⬇️ Image
2/ The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel reports a blow-by-blow account of the strike on 31 January 2024. According to the channel, the missiles approached from the sea and were spotted by the Black Sea Fleet at 16:15.
3/ "Enemy aircraft" and "missile danger" alerts were activated, and at 17:13 the 112 emergency telephone line received a message from a local resident that they had heard an explosion at the airfield.

1/ Some Russian convicts fighting in Ukraine have been formed into a special forces unit called Storm Gladiator. Although it brings together the best fighters from Storm Z and Storm V units, Storm Gladiator is nonetheless reported to have a survival rate of under 40 percent. Image
2/ Storm Gladiator was reportedly created in September 2022 as Storm Z's "special forces squad". It got its name a year later in honour of the sacked Major General Ivan Popov of the 58th Combined Arms Army, who uses the call sign "Spartak" (Spartacus).
3/ Popov acknowledged them in his farewell message in July 2023 when he greeted "my beloved gladiators". A letter sent by the unit's commander describes it as a "separate special purpose battalion", and other documents call it a “OBSN” (separate special forces battalion).
