I was talking to a friend recently.
He said I know Covid is important to you but I live life normally, I travel, eat out, go on buses and it haven't caught it. My dad had it 3 times and it knocked him down for a few days each time but he's recovered well.
"I just carry on".
1/🧵
I've been thinking about this a while. He's a good guy and he cares. If he goes to hospital, he masks - but he doesn't do this in day to day life.
He doesn't feel highly vulnerable.
That's his experience.
His adult kids have had it & recovered.
He isn't ignorant of the threat.
2/
He's up to date with all the vaccines shots he was eligible for and believes their protection is high.
But he doesn't quite see the threat as I do.
I understand his position.
To him, people like me are seen as on the fringe & not an authority. I'm respected by him though.
3/
So what I know and understand about the virus, long covid & other more hidden medium / long term effects are not what he hears elsewhere.
If there was ever to be a swing to people changing behaviour, he'd be a person I know would be willing to. I think there are lots like him.
4/
It reaffirms to me that until there is truthful information from Governments, Public Health & news orgs that is accurate, accessible & heavily publicised; most people will not see a reason to change - even if they'd actually be willing to. Even if they acknowledge some threat.
5/
This is one of the issues with the 'appearance' of normal.
The lived experience of not feeling heavily affected...YET.
To me that is the crux. Not feeling affected so far.
Many don't think beyond now or the near future & so the thought of repeated infections indefinitely..
6/
..doesn't really change their opinion or behaviour now.
If a new variant which seemed scarier or even a new virus came along, it's that uncertainty & new threat that would temporarily change people like my friend.
He's become comfortable with the currently circulating disease.
7/
I don't dislike my friend despite our differing views. I don't tell him he's got it wrong but I do tell him what I know & strongly believe. I think it's important to have the conversations though and try to understand each other's position.
It is clear where the failings are.
8/
I do think there are many people that cannot be reached no matter what transpires but I know there are lots like my friend who are kind of waiting on a higher authority than me to direct them.
Most would support simple measures that are not too restrictive or onerous.
9/
So we must keep trying to apply pressure to those with the power to change things.
We must continue to offer-up info, push for clean air measures, model mask wearing & try to lead by example wherever possible.
Clean air will get support.
Folk just need to know.
I fight on.
10/🔚

A little thread looking back at some of @ashishkjha's views around isolation.
"What would ideal COVID Isolation guidance be?"
1/🧵
"5 day isolation & negative test is ideal"
"5 days isolation + 5 d masking reasonable too"
2/
Use testing to end isolation.
"CDC should have included a negative antigen tests to end isolation"

Long hospital visit for my daughter today.
Grateful to have the use of various tools to layer-up mitigations to make it safer for her.
Let me show you what was done and give details of what was used in this short thread:
1/🧵 Image of daughter in hospital setting showing her wearing a 3M FFP3 respirator fitted with a Sip Mask, a Nukit Far-UVC torch (one of 3 used) and a Smart Air QT3 air filter. Poster on the wall ironically says 'catch it, bin it, kill it' demonstrating a lack of knowledge in disease transmission.
So we have tried various respirators and find the @3M Aura style provides the best fit for her.
We added a @SIPmask because she needed to drink as part of the testing she was undergoing.
We purchased both of these through @FaceMaskStore - a trusted supplier.
2/
We used @NukitToBeSure Far-UVC torches. We had 3 of them dotted around the room. I'm extremely grateful that these were developed by Nukit and made as affordably as possible.
We bought them here - there is a wait for stock just now though:

I asked someone recently why they were not wearing a respirator in a busy indoor setting.
Reply:
"had a killer sinus infection, was already losing my voice, and my mask was ibuprofen my pocket. I’m sick as a dog right now (not covid) but yes I have some regrets!"
Thoughts:
1/ 🧵
Well this was a person answering with honesty which I appreciate.
A lot of effort has gone into making sure this person thinks this way. I acknowledge that. Through Gov't & PH messaging.
Not protecting yourself is a 'paid for' action.
Keep 'topping up' infection levels. Sigh.
2/
But knowing that you're sick (*see addendum) and knowing that Covid kills and disables people and yet:
-making no effort to stay away
-making no effort to protect others

These are the things I find hard to forgive.
It's a little like walking around armed with a (bio)weapon.

Thread on UK schools; for the record.

The Government position is that they have robust evidence that most classrooms are adequately ventilated.
I have 2 problems with this:
1) Their definition of adequate is in no way sufficient.
2) No such evidence has ever been published.
1/🧵
Looking at what is 'adequate'. This has been derived from standard BB101 & says that occupied areas must not constantly exceed 1500ppm CO2.
This is much too high to be as effective as possible in reducing airborne disease transmission.
I disagree that it's in any way adequate.
2/
They say that their action sheet tells schools to take action to try to reduce CO2 levels down to 800ppm. Indicates good ventilation.
3 more problems:
1) Many classrooms don't have the means to do this - especially not consistently; access to nat vent is limited & variable.
