In her interview with @danieljhan_, Peg Schaffer makes a claim that her support of @GovMurphy's wife's campaign is fine because there is "there is no quid pro quo"
I'm no lawyer, but do we just take her word on that? Is that how this usually works? 2/12
So, a quid pro quo is "the specific intent to give or receive a “thing of value” in exchange for some future action that the public official will take (and may already have determined to take), or for a past act that he has already taken." 3/12
.law.cornell.edu/wex/quid_pro_q…
And while I cannot prove such exchanges took place, I can say that @GovMurphy has given Peg Schaffer a number of things of value in her time as chair.
And Peg Schaffer will try to give @TammyMurphyNJ the Somerset line tonight, which gives an appearance of impropriety 4/12
And again, @GovMurphy used his elected office here, not his personal fortune.
For example, @GovMurphy gave Bergen Chair Paul Juliano a $280K job as CEO of the NJ Sports Expo Authority.
And then he put Somerset Chair Peg Schaffer on the NJSEA Board 5/12
And frankly, Peg Schaffer shouldn't have accepted, because she had a potential conflict of interest as a cannabis lobbyist.
But no worries. Union Chair Nicholas Scutari simply fast-tracked a new law to accommodate her.
Now @GovMurphy is free to invite whoever he deems appropriate on these trips. But I'm curious as to why he thought cannabis lobbyist Peg Schaffer was an appropriate choice.
For one thing, cannabis is pretty much illegal in Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. 8/12
Secondly, the appearance of impropriety is not great here. This trip took place from Oct 14-23, 2023. This is after @AndyKimNJ declared he was running for Senate (Sept 23rd), but before @TammyMurphyNJ declared (Nov 15th).
@TammyMurphyNJ was on the trip with Peg Schaffer 9/12
And then, the day @TammyMurphyNJ announced her candidacy, Peg Schaffer issues a statement backing her Senate run in which she specifically mentions having seen @TammyMurphyNJ on the world stage AND the international stage (Yes! Both of them!) 10/12:
Interestingly, polling data seems to suggest that an @AndyKimNJ senate run is more likely to flip CD-7 from red to blue, which Peg Schaffer should want
And CD-12's Bonnie Watson Coleman has called for reforming the county line, which Peg would hate 12/12
The Somerset Convention for the New Jersey Senate race is today, and there is a LOT to talk about here.
Peg Schaffer is supports @TammyMurphyNJ. And she seems to be saying and doing things that most county chairs would usually not want to be seen saying or doing, I think?
This may take several thread (sorry about that).
But seriously, there's a crazy letter, conflicts of interest, the NJSEA (again!), reefer madness, a trip to Japan, raising hands like kindergartners to vote. I will try to get to it all.
But first the letter. 2/9
So on Friday, March 1, Somerset delegates received a letter from chair Peg Schaffer that enthusiastically endorsed @TammyMurphyNJ, but also seemed to be making some rather strange claims.
So Paul Juliano was elected chair of the Bergen Dems after Stellato's departure. And for awhile everything was as aboveboard-ish as anything in NJ politics ever is.
Then in 2023, Prieto retires, and @GovMurphy names Paul Juliano to replace him as NJSEA CEO. 3/9
Let's talk about the Burlington Co Democratic Convention and @GovMurphy's abuse of elected office.
He's basically threatening the mayors, commissioners, & state senator @Troy4NJ7 who have endorsed @AndyKimNJ instead of @TammyMurphyNJ
This is going to bite @GovMurphy on the...🧵
So @AndyKimNJ should win Burlington. It's his home county and he's really popular.
He's been endorsed by 9 mayors, all 5 commissioners, and State Senator Troy Singleton (@Troy4NJ7) and other electeds-and good for them, because this is actually an act of political courage. 2/9
See @TammyMurphyNJ didn't try to earn their votes, but rather @GovMurphy himself made phone calls threatening them.
And let's reflect on this. The sitting governor of New Jersey threatened people for not supporting his wife's senate run. 3/9
So that push poll released in support of @TammyMurphyNJ's Senate campaign makes me think she must really be worried about @AndyKimNJ.
The accusations made by her are Trumpian in that they are true of her and not @AndyKim 1/6
One accusation from the pro @TammyMurphyNJ push poll is that @AndyKimNJ "didn't live [in NJ] until he ran for congress" but "shopped around" for an easy seat to win".
Actually, @AndyKimNJ grew up in NJ.
@TammyMurphyNJ was born and raised in Virginia. 2/6
Another accusation in the @TammyMurphyNJ push poll:
@AndyKimNJ is a "deceitful opportunist" like George Santos
This is purposeful misinformation fabricated from a NY Times article.
And the poll credits the First Lady with NJ state government initiatives, which sure 🙄 3/6
