I have always been concerned by big tech companies, whether American or otherwise, collecting the data of American citizens.
I’m also against the current bill to ban TikTok.
As written, the bill gives the president the authority to unilaterally determine which foreign-owned companies present a “national security threat,” and can unilaterally order these companies to be divested from their foreign owners.
We already have the CFIUS process in law to require divestment when national security risks arise with the foreign ownership of a company. It has been used 558 times to make declarations related to potential divestitures since 2018.
The current bill does not impose new restrictions on social media and tech companies from harvesting and selling our data. Nothing in it prevents an American company that buys TikTok from selling user data to the Chinese Government, for example.
This TikTok ban would, however, give broad new powers to the Executive Branch at the expense of the Legislative Branch—and one can only imagine how Joe Biden or future presidents like him could abuse them.
Why do all the domestic spying hawks—politicians fighting against FISA reform who want to continue unconstitutional surveillance of American citizens—support forcing the sale of TikTok?
Simple: they want your data for themselves.
I’m open to legislation preventing the CCP from using TikTok to collect our data. But not this bill.
Always be suspicious when anyone in Washington declares they need special powers because of an emergency—especially if both parties are cheerleading it.
Let’s not forget that one of the most egregious perpetrators of the misuse of our data is our own government.

🧵 1. The Supreme Court of the United States does, in fact, have ethical standards.
2. This is a solution in search of a problem, but it's a solution that would cause a lot of other problems.
3. If this were to become law, they'd figure out a way to get one of these panels of lower court judges to order the recusal of this or that Justice to inflict their own carefully designed Supreme Court for that moment.
🧵 1. The politicization of the FBI represents a clear and present danger to our democratic principles, and it is imperative that we address this issue with the urgency it demands.
2. Based on past experience, the FBI is incapable of instigating and implementing the necessary reforms internally.
3. It is a grave concern that our nation’s preeminent law enforcement organization is falling far short of its lofty standards. A disservice to the hardworking men and women of the FBI who risk their lives to protect us everyday.
1/ The Senate Republican conference is united behind the House Republican conference in support of spending cuts and structural budget reform as a starting point for negotiations on the debt ceiling.
2/ Our economy is in free fall due to unsustainable fiscal policies. This trajectory must be addressed with fiscal reforms. Moreover, recent Treasury projections have reinforced the urgency of addressing the debt ceiling.
3/ The House has taken a responsible first step in coming to the table with their proposals. It is imperative that the president now do the same. As such, we will not be voting for cloture on any bill that raises the debt ceiling without substantive spending and budget reforms.
But today, by passing my amendment, we have the opportunity to ensure that all Americans have a voice in matters of war and peace.
Unfortunately, we’ve strayed from our founding principles.
My Amendment gives Congress the ability to review and reevaluate our involvement in wars, and adjust them if necessary to better meet the specific objectives of the conflict or engagement.
🧵1/4 I came away from the classified briefing with more questions than answers. President Joe Biden's lack of transparency is concerning and deeply disturbing.
2/4 Following the briefing, it is unclear as to whether these incidents are a series of extremely significant events being downplayed by the White House, or inconsequential incidents being exaggerated and blown out of proportion.
3/4 It is baffling and frustrating that these “objects” had to be taken down with fighter jets and missiles, yet we still do not know anything about them and still don’t have them in our possession.
🧵 1/7 President Biden's silence in the face of multiple aircraft violating US airspace is inexcusable.
2/7 His staff and cabinet making light of the situation by joking about aliens and balloons does nothing more than trivialize the gravity of the situation and potentially undermine our national security.
3/7 By failing to address these aircraft incursions, President Biden appears to be shirking his responsibility to protect and defend our nation as outlined in Article II of the US Constitution.
