Ideological climate change deniers, are stuck in an ideological fantasy world.

Everything they know about CO2 and its role in nature, comes from the very same science, that they constantly try to dismiss as lie. A serious inconsistency, indicating deep irrationality.
1/🧵 Image
You can't see carbon dioxide CO2, intuit its presence. Climate and science deniers are wholly reliant on science, for their knowledge about carbon dioxide, it's properties and its role in nature. There is no independent source for their knowledge of this, outside of science.
2/
It really is utterly bizarre, that they try to dismiss the greenhouse effect as a scam, whilst not realizing that everything they know about the existence of carbon dioxide and its properties, comes from the same science, they try to dismiss as a scam.

3/rigb.org/explore-scienc…
They can't have it both ways. To on the one hand dismiss science as lies and a scam, and then to pontificate about CO2, and it being a building block of all life on earth, wholly premised on the same science, they flippantly dismiss.
4/
It truly is a bizarre and extreme example of the cherry-picking logical fallacy, where they arbitrarily accept what science has discovered about CO2, and its role in photosynthesis, but chose to ignore the rest of the science about CO2.

5/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_pi…
They arbitrarily, ignore the rest of the science about CO2, simply because it contradicts their bizarre ideological beliefs, that it is the destiny of humanity to burn fossil fuels. It's difficult to know whether this stupid irrationality, is contrived and knowingly dishonest.
6/
What I do know for certain, is these people knowingly lie, misquote and misrepresent evidence and graphs, which have long been dealt with, and exposed as fraudulent.

On the basis of this, it seems that they believe in lying for their cause. Most are knowing liars.

@GeorgeMonbiot This reveals a deep truth, and that is, that the most fanatical and extreme cult, it is a death cult of extremist maniacs, is capitalism, neoliberalism, economic liberalism, economic growthers, or however you want to typify them. It's the most extreme cult known to humanity.
1/
@GeorgeMonbiot We only don't see it, because this death cult has become normalized, and is everywhere. It's common for those wrapped up in fanatical cults, not to be able to see, just how deranged their cult is, because they've been habituated to see it as normal.
2/
@GeorgeMonbiot Only those outside the cult, see clearly just how deranged these cults are, and there is no perspective on this, within the cult. But what happens, when this cult is so pervasive and everywhere, that there is no outside the cult?

Why, as a society, we're not seeing the big picture of the climate and ecological emergency.

In 1972, after the first UN Environment Conference in Stockholm, the situation seemed quite clear. The action plan should have result in action.

1/🧵un.org/en/conferences…
Unfortunately, by the early 1980s, the UN realized that none of the action agreed to in 1972 had happened, so they set up the Brundtland Commission in 1983, to examine the whole situation.

2/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brundtlan…
In 1987, the Brundtland Commission delivered its report, Our Common Future, defining the concept of Sustainable Development, created to stop our civilization, heading in a globally suicidal direction. It dealt with what they called climatic change.

I just want to write a quick thread about the absurdity of climate change denial. Where usually right wing ideologues, deny the reality of climate change, because it doesn't fit in with their ideological outlook.

It is absurd, and irrational.
1/🧵
I'm just writing this, because I just has someone, come along, confidently stating that climate change was a scam, because the climate changed all the time. Probably because he'd read it on some propaganda website, sponsored by the fossil fuel industry.
2/
For many years, I've used a simple challenge to climate change deniers. To explain why every scientific organization in the world, in every field of science, broadly supports the IPCC, summary of anthropogenic climate change as fact. Inviting them to contradict me.

It's not just Europe that is totally unprepared for climate impacts, but the whole world.

The whole problem is this idea, that climate impacts will only be a problem in the distant future, with large sea level rises etc.

1/🧵theguardian.com/environment/20…
I'm extremely worried by this false perception, that you need large scale physical impacts, to seriously impact our societies, and our civilization.

It's due to a lack of insight into ecological relationships, and an understanding of systems.
2/
I've been trying to draw attention to this. There are no proper studies of how resilient our civilization will be to climate and ecological shocks.

That's right, no one is even studying it. Therefore, all this complacency is based on wishful thinking.

The human system as it is now, is nothing but a game, with rules designed by powerful people in charge of our societies over the generations, to suit themselves. It makes them very rich, keeps you poor, and gives all the control to them. Heads they win, tails you lose.
1/🧵
This may seem very cynical, subversive even, but it is simply how it is. How else is it that Trump has committed so many egregious crimes, and manages to wriggle out of it each time? Same in the UK with our corrupt government.

2/theguardian.com/politics/2022/…
It's a rigged system, with loaded dice, where the rich and the powerful always win, and everyone else loses.

The post-war boom, which lifted living standards for so many, over the following decades, was an accident, resulting from egalitarian policies, put in place in WW2.

On the Climate Crisis Club yesterday, the scientific predictions for the progress of climate change came up. I do not dispute any of that science, but those who see it unfolding like this, have made one profound mistaken assumption.

1/🧵
The conventional interpretation of the science, mistakenly sees our societies, our civilization, lasting much as it is now, whilst we see huge sea level rise at the end of the century, putting in place measures, to reverse climate change.
2/
I don't dispute the veracity of this science. Rather the scientists, assuring us it is not catastrophic, do not understand the dynamics of our civilization, and how vulnerable it is to climate shocks, long before the before the big physical impacts, like sea level rise.
