1/ Run of the mill Israelis don't talk about the starvation of Gaza. There is a lot of chatter about how Hamas is responsible for the Gazans' plight. There is no mercy for the Gazans who die in the daily bombings and bombardments. Even acknowledgement is rare. --->
2/ "Hamas must be destroyed" is accepted as sufficient reasoning for everything from indiscriminate slaughter to "errors in judgment" made by Israeli field commanders (for example, the destruction of Al-Israa university by Brigadier General Barak Hiram). --->
3/ Presented with such an all-encompassing goal, the "collateral damage" of Gazan deaths is a price Israelis are willing to pay, like Lord Farquad in "Shrek". As long as the narrative can be contained within a military framework Israelis can accept is as "professional". --->
4/ But regular people don't talk
about the starvation. That is a little strange, because from the beginning of the "war" pundits representing the entire Israeli political spectrum have spoken on record about the "benefits" of starvation. One might expect public debate. --->
5/ One would be wrong. Very few people talk about starvation, about the Israeli policy and about the famine already beginning to rage in the northern part of the strip. Even those eager to kill or deport Gazans tend to stay mum. There is little rejection or denial. --->
6/ We don't talk about it. We know, I think, that starvation and ensuing famine are points of no return. We cannot blame Hamas. We cannot abuse the spectres of Israel's own victims, nearly 1200 massacred by Hamas, in our eyes the ultimate justification for endless death. --->
7/ The starvation and the famine are what we fear most, so deeply that we could never express this fear in words - that our chickens have come home to roost. We fear what we have become. We cannot pretend that this is not who we are, that we've been hijacked by "extremists". --->
8/ We know. We know that decades of promoting Jewish supremacy and its necessary counterpart, the total dehumanization of the Palestinians, have brought us to this point. We cannot imagine ourselves validated by anything other than this supremacy. --->
9/ Some of us relish the occasion. Most of us believed we had solid foundations even if our house was built on a faultline. Now, however, we stare silently at the receding edge of the abyss as we fall.

1/ Over the last several days, Israel has carried out assasinations ("targeted killings") of Hamas personnel in Rafah and killed a senior Hamas police commander during a raid on Shifa hospital in Gaza. We can learn something about Israeli reasoning from these killings. --->
2/ all the men killed dealt with logistics and coordination. The senior police officer oversaw the distribution of the humanitarian aid allowed into Gaza. The men killed in Rafah were liaison officers between Hamas' government and mainly non-military units in the field. --->
3/ Why did Israel kill these men? Because, in principle, they represent Hamas attempts to "govern". In Israeli eyes, Hamas is always and entirely a terrorist entity. Enhancing the ability of Hamas to distribute aid or to enforce public order is akin to promoting terrorism. --->

1/ Israel's newest "raid" on Shifa Hospital in Gaza city demonstrates the collapse of any "pretense" of strategy. Israel has been reduced to finding needles in a haystack - killing senior Hamas operatives- when it can locate them. Why? --->
2/ This was, supposedly, Israel's strategy from day one of the war: to gradually dismantle Hamas "assets" until the ultimate collapse of the organization. Such assets supposedly included everything from tunnels to senior leaders. --->
3/ However, the strategy was carried out by the use of unprecedented lethal force, a "rolling curtain of fire" including massive aerial and artillery bombardment. Attempts to "eliminate" senior Hamas leaders led to the "elimination" of hundreds of non-combatants. --->

1/ This post saddens me as an Israeli. There is Antisemitism in the world. There are also the abhorrent, unceasing actions of Israel in Gaza. To once again claim that Israel is being singled out for a-historical reasons is to reject any notion of accountability for Israel. --->
2/ Hamas performed a horrific massacre on October 7th. Since then Israel has been demolishing Gaza and killing innocent bystanders in unprecedented numbers. This is the result of a coscious decision on the part of Israeli authorities. There is no need to decide "genocide". --->
3/ The death and destruction are clear, apparent and excessive. Suggesting that Israel is outside history, that the anger, frustration and despair Israel's actions generate have little to do with reality on the ground, is an attempt to have and eat the proverbial cake. --->

1/ This remark by the man who is, perhaps, the voice of mainstream Israeli discourse is a lie on many levels. Histroically, the Palestinian struggle against Israel began long before the advent of what he calls Islamic fundamentalism. --->
2/ Hamas began its suicide attacks after the Hebron maasacre carried out by settler Baruch Goldstein. There is very little in common between Iran (and Hizballah) and Hamas. The latter has always defined itself as a part of the Palestinian national struggle. --->
3/ The former are as far removed from the global Jihad as they can be (they are Shia). The alliance of "moderates" exists mostly in the minds of Trump and Netanyahu. There is nothing moderate about Israel's actions in Gaza. --->
