Something is changing the pattern of Russian battlefield losses. Russia has been losing Tanks and IFVs each month since the start of the war. It has lost more IFVs than tanks each month of the war, an average 1.87 IFVs (red line) for each tank. but each month the ratio (blue line) has been reasonably close to the average, peeking at 2.17 in May 22, and a minimum 1.47 in Mar 23. However, this month March 2024, it's much higher 3.87. and even higher than that 6.80 if you just look at the most recent 10 days.

I don't know the reason, maybe it is related to tactics or Vehicle availability, or perhaps the election in Russia is a factor, but it is happening and seems to be accelerating throughout the month.

For my regular followers, sorry, to keep banging on about this, I know I have done a few tweets about it, but each time I check the numbers, the ratio has increased further.

For this tweet, I am including APC, IFVs and vehicles that are something between the two together as IFVs for simplicity.

I will put 4 more graphs/charts in a thread below with more info.Image
This is a graph of all Russia's lost equipment each month as a % of that month's total losses. There has been a gradual reduction in everything that is not a Tank or IFV, but that is very gradual, in comparison to the change in the last month in tanks compared to IFVs. Image
Here is the data table for all of Russia's losses each month. it is built from the data on the website which is similar to the ORYX list, in some ways. But, I use this site, mostly because when a photo/video emerges, the @WarSpotting team do their best to work out when the photo was taken, and then allocate it to that date, making it easier to look for trends and changes over time.Warspotting.netImage
Plotting all of Russia's IFV and APC losses on one graph, with each type as a % of that month's total losses, we get this graph, there have been some notable changes over time, the rise of the BMP-1 and decline in air-mobile IFV like the BMD-2. However, there has been no significant change and almost no change at all comparing March 24 with Feb 24, or even Jan 24. suggesting that this is not about one or 2 large batches of one type of IFV arriving at the front.Image
Comparing all Russian tank losses by type each month of the war, we get this graph. There is some change here a decline in the % of T-80s, with other types, T-90 and T-72s, becoming relatively more common. but the decline is not that big, compared to other month-on-month changes, and is not big enough on its own to account for the change in the overall IFV to Tank ratio.

Thread End, but keen to hear ideas or thoughts as to what is driving this change.Image
I like WarSpotting, because it attempts to work out the date of each photo or video recording a loss and allocating the loss to that month. but other people also track Russian losses. Thanks to @MKot316 who has added up the losses on those websites we get this table, it does look like the same trend, from Oryx and Andrew P, but not quite so pronounced.Image

We all know Russia has lost a lot of tanks; 2460 from @WarSpotting 2850 from @Rebel44CZ on ORYX and 6832 from the UGS. But what type, what Varaint, and how has that changed over the war? a Thred on Russia's tank losses, with the data tables and my opinion on the real total at the end.
This is a 3-month Average graph so does not include Feb 22 or Mar 24. It showed the rise of the T-80 and the decline of the T-72. Other types have been much smaller in number, but T-90 and T-62 are on the Rise while T-64 is declining slightly.Image
Russia Tank losses, when not using a 3-month Average look like this, 'Out-liers' like June 23 tend to have fewer tanks destroyed in that month, which is the advantage of a 3-month average. but this showed March 24, which has had a smaller proportion of T-80s and more T-72s than for a while, but overall not that unusual.Image
Russia has lost 97 T-90s Visually Confirmed @Warspotting (unless otherwise stated all numbers are from Warspotting) T-90 is the most modern and the only Russian tank in new production. These started off as all T-90As gradually being replaced by more modern T-90Ms by mid-2023, with a brief appearance of some export-only T-90Ss, then in early 2024 we saw some T-90As and T-90Ss re-appear, but it's still mostly T-90Ms.Image

Has Russia given up on their new T-72 Obr 2022s? (blue in the graph below). By looking at what equipment Russia is losing each month, 'Hard data' I then in to graphs to get a proxy and estimate how much of each equipment Russia might have/be using. The T-72 Obr 2022s are two types that first appeared in 2022, most obvious by the extra ETA armour, and normally have 1PN96-MT-02 sights, which is better than the oldest sights, not as good as the T-72 Obr 2016 sight, but made with mostly Russian parts. There are Obr 2022 variants made from both T-72B and T-72 B3 types, up until December 2023 they seemed to be growing each month, But dropped noticeably in Feb 2024, I thought this might be 'statistical noise' but have dropped more in March. So I'm wondering if it is a trend, probably not enough data to say that confidently, but it feels like the right time to ask the question. A short thread, with The data table at the end. 1/5Image
Looking at all 1230 T-72 losses on one graph, divided into 13 categories, produces the table below. Some things, like the decline of the T-72B3 Orb 2016 can be seen, (light brown in the graph) but overall it is a bit jumbled, hence the graph me grouping than in the first graph. Its worth noting that there had to be an extra category added \T-72-definatly an Obr 2022 but can't tell which base modal it's from, dark green in the graph. 2/5Image
The individual variants of T-72 have varied quite a lot over the war, But if you divide by the base modal, Old T-72s, T-72B and T-72B3, it does not change that much month to month, this graph does not have a 3-month smoothing effect on it, unlike the first graph. 3/5 Image

Russia is now visually confirmed to have lost 75 Tanks in December so far, which is more than any month in 2023 except February and October. Here is a short thread of how that breaks down, data. table at the end. 1/n Image
This graph is the same data as the first but with a 3-month smoothing. T-72s and T-80s between them remain the main types of tank. T-90, T-64, T-62, and T-55 are all small numbers in comparison. it looked like the T-80 was growing in comparison to the T-72 for the first 16 months of the war, before maxing out at 51% and then declining, December has seen a rise in the % of T-80s, not clear if this is 'monthly variation' or a new trend. 2/nImage
Looking in detail at the T-90, I have 2 graphs because the numbers are so low that a 3 month Bar chat is better to see the change. there has been an almost complete change from T-90As to T-90Ms, suggesting that the T-90As have either all been destroyed or withdrawn to be upgraded to T-90Ms. There was a brief appearance of T-90S but that's gone now. the T-90S is the 'export only' variant, these tanks were probably the ones meant for India and used because of an extreme shortage of tanks at that time.Image

Updated Russian tank loss charts, Starting with Losses by type. See how the T-80 losses peaked in June at 63.9% of all tank losses, but we are now 3 months into a steep decline. My theory: they have run out of reparable T-80s. Image
Here is the data table for the above graph, There will be 4 more Tank Charts T-90, T-80, T-72, and all, by variant, each with tables to follow. Hope people appreciate I've now got the Y assis going to 100% Image
T-90 losses, As noted in the Perun video the T-90A has almost disappeared, even though there are only 33 confirmed losses. it also feels like just a single batch of T-90Ss 'export version got to the front line and they are all gone now. Image
