Thread: India Education Report Card on Higher Education (2014-2023):
The source of Data is from the UGC, AISHE and RBI Reports. I tried to take the latest data, where available from UGC
1. Excluding INI’s our universities grew 68% in 8 years from 655 in 2014 to 1100 in 2022. Most INI’s like IITs, IIMs, IISER etc. were existing stand alone institutions now getting a degree granting status. Deemed Universities, did not grow much.
2. The real story begins here.
State Public Universities grew from 318 in 2014 to 482 today.
However, State Private Universities grew three-fold from 154 to 477 universities in just 8 years.
For the first time, India has as many private universities as public universities.
3. The other big change happened in the growth of colleges. Most of these are private colleges but affiliated to a state public university. The total colleges grew 42% from 29930 in 2014 to 42825 in 2022 (excluding standalone institutions)
4. Private colleges grew 52% from 22100 in 2014 to 33632 in 2022 while Govt colleges increased from 7230 in 2014 to 9193 in 2022.
Govt added just 1963 colleges, Private players added 11532. Private players added 6X to what govt added.
79% of Indian colleges are now private
5. The total enrolments saw a healthy 20% increase from 360 lacs in 2013 to 433 lacs in 2022. This outpaced the population growth of 15%. In a positive development, gender diversity improved from 54:46 in favor of males in 2014 to 52:48 in 2022.
6. The fees charged increased too. IIM fees increased from 2.4 lacs in 2009 to 30 lacs today. IIT fees increased 125% in 8 years from 3.6 lacs in 2014 to 8 lacs in 2022 while NITs held it. State run colleges did not resort to blatant fees increases as central institutions did.
7. The increased fees led to increased education loans.
Total Education loans from PSBs were 60,017 crores in 2014.
As of 2023, the total education loans by PSBs and NBFCs are 122,199 crores.
In 8 years, our education loans doubled.
So, in higher education report card for the last decade, for the first time we have as many private universities as public Univ., 79% colleges are private, fees doubled and education loans doubled with a debt trap and NPAs looming large.
Demographic Dividend, anyone?

Thread: India Education Report Card (2014 to 2023):
Let us start with School Education. How has the government performed in the last decade? This thread will explain through data, India’s efforts to claim its demographic dividend. Comparisons are drawn based on available data:
1. India’s population grew from 121 Crores to 139 crores in 2023, a growth of 14.64%. 2. The Number of govt schools in India were 12.04 lacs in 2014 but fell to 11.28 lacs by the end of 2022. While our population grew by about 15%, our public schools fell by 7%, widening the gap.
3. Correspondingly, private schools went up from 2.55 lacs to 3.35 lacs, a growth of 32%. 4. While population growth should lead to growth in enrollments, in reality, they didn’t. In 2014, enrollments in schools were 268.3 lacs, which fell to 265.24 lacs in 2022, a fall of 1.2%
Thread: The horror stories by 'loot and scoot' admission agents entrapping Indian students for study abroad is growing by the day. Though this thread is just about MBBS Abroad, the modus operandi remains the same:
1. Of the 496 MBBS colleges that Indian students studied at, 218 colleges were not accredited even in their home country. Unfortunately, 18,878 Indian students were lured to study in these colleges. medicine.careers360.com/articles/fmge-…
2. Most colleges did not have an hospital of their own. Students learn theory but never have the skill as they never treated a patient. Like our Kota, they teach students to crack the FMGE while not skilling them. medicine.careers360.com/articles/fmge-…
Thread: Many people ask me why I decided to support the cause of the victims of Bada Business owned by @DrVivekBindra . Since I announced my intent, I had 2000+ victims joining a group and 650+ joined a zoom meeting with the lawyers. Let me share some compelling stories:
1. I met a housewife who took a gold loan to take the course to help her husband and supplement family income. With zero income and a loan, the husband has the additional burden of an EMI.
2. I met a person who is 90% handicapped with a desperate need for a spinal disc surgery. She bought the course as she was promised a Rs.40000 income every month. She is in extreme spinal pain but no longer has the money for a surgery.
Thread: This is for all the victims who want a refund from @BadaBusinessOff and @DrVivekBindra. As committed, I had a couple of meetings with lawyers and the following action points have been suggested:
1. The legal opinion is that the case is strong enough to demand a full fees refund. A clear cut cheating case can be established. But it will a few months for the results.
2. We have been advised that instead of approaching local consumer courts, we approach the 'National Consumer disputes redressal commission' based in Delhi. This would mean many victims from different states filing a joint petition with a minimum exposure of Rs. 200 lacs.
Thread: 1. Many have been willing me to take on Vivek Bindra and take this matter to a logical conclusion. I am neither a victim not have a locus standi. If he files a case, I would gladly take him on without giving in and force a ruling. But knowing my history, he wont do it.
2. In the case of Bindra, the victims must file a case in the consumer courts or better still have a FIR registered in the nearest police station. They should also complain to the @EduMinOfIndia @jagograhakjago @PMOIndia @RBI @narendramodi.
They should also write to the following who allowed themselves to be called as faculty who were supposed to be teaching the students.
Thread: The Bada Claims of Vivek Bindra: 1. This man started off as a motivational speaker, uses a concoction of religion, nationalism and appeals to the inane need to make easy money. Like all charlatans, he has the gift of the gab. He was exposed by @SandeepSeminars too.
2. He caught my attention when he launched a 10 Day MBA program for the ‘Over 25 crore students in India are looking for jobs’ segment. How did he get the 25 crores, only he knows? Taking on fake MBA institutions has been familiar territory. So, I started digging:
3. Vivek Bindra became Dr.Vivek Bindra courtesy a Doctorate in Philosophy from the ‘Open International University for Complementary Medicine’ based out of Sri Lanka. The webpage of the university doesn’t open. However, the purpose is served and he has a Dr prefixed to his name.
