While doing dishes after dinner tonight, my 10-yo approached me with tears in his eyes.
He said nothing as my heart was racing, trying to think of all the horrible possibilities.
Finally, he pulled an egg from behind his back. 1/6
We had been to the park earlier in the day and he & his friends had found what looked to be an abandoned next with one cracked egg and one complete egg.
He wanted to give that egg a shot at life and he hid it as he rode his scooter home and tried to carry on about his day. 2/6
He told me that it felt like he had a bowling ball in his stomach as he kept this secret. He wanted to tell us, but was worried he'd get in trouble.
All day, he snuck time to do research on what the egg needed-- a nest, incubator, etc.
He knew he needed help. 3/6
So that's when he couldn't hold it any longer and stood in front of me with streaming tears and told me the whole thing.
I have never felt so much compassion in this single moment, ever. 4/6
So, now here we are, with an identified egg wrapped in a heating pad, Easter egg grass, in a storage bin.

We can assume how this story will go, but what would we be teaching our child if we didn't try?
The world is so cruel at times and life is but a single cracked egg, but those tears in my kid's eyes also give me so much hope for tomorrow. ❤️ 6/6
(What I forgot to mention, was while in the midst of all of this the 5-yo bursts into tears and cries, "I don't want a bird!!"🫣
[Oh, my goodness. So many typos from me. I'm so sorry-- I was totally overcome writing this post. 😅🙏]
