Not Everything Is as It Seems – Giving Thanks
Today’s scripture says that we should give thanks to the LORD… the title of this psalm is about giving thanks to Him. But notice how this psalm starts out in verse 1 with a call for us all to give Him thanks. After it starts with this call, it describes a bunch of problems that
came along and then says that the LORD rescued them from those problems. Finally it ends in the last two verses (9-10) calling once again for everyone to give thanks to the LORD.

This seems like it is emphasizing the need to be grateful saints and to thank Him for rescuing us.
But I would counter to you this morning that a deeper understanding of what it means to be a saint of God (understanding the overall story and theme of the bible) is to give thanks to Him ALL THE TIME.

Notice in these verses how the difficult times described in these verses are
sandwiched between two calls to give thanks. The thanks are not contingent on what He did, but they were happening anyway. This is understanding. True thanksgiving and praise to the LORD is NOT based on what He does for or gives to us (which is a lot). No, true thanks is for WHO
HE IS. He has really done a lot. But as we grow closer to Him and look past the temporary things (that the enemy tries to distract us and to get us to focus on), we come to understand that the real reason we thank Him is far deeper than what He does for us. For we know that He is
faithful to provide for all categories of what we need. We are grateful for all of those things LORD, but even if we don’t always feel them, we will thank You…

Just for who You are…
Thanksgiving to the Lord for His Great Works of Deliverance
1 Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy,
3 And gathered out of the lands,
From the east and
from the west,
From the north and from the south.
4 They wandered in the wilderness in a desolate way;
They found no city to dwell in.
5 Hungry and thirsty,
Their soul fainted in them.
6 Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble,
And He delivered them out of their distresses.
7 And He led them forth by the right way,
That they might go to a city for a dwelling place.
8 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,
And for His wonderful works to the children of men!
9 For He satisfies the longing soul,
And fills the hungry soul with goodness. - Psalms 107:1-9

The Special Gifting and Power of the Knight
This is a continuation of my recent devotional about the similarities of the kingdom of God and His plan with the game of chess. In that devotional, I discussed how even though the pawn is generally considered to be the weakest and most expendable piece on the chess board, it
actually has a very powerful gift and capability that no other piece can do. It has the power to redeem (or to free) other captured pieces. The knight also has a unique capability that is an image of a biblical gift that is given in the kingdom of God.

The knight is very limited

The LORD – The Ultimate Chess Master
I have been contemplating and pondering this special message for the past several days. It is about a theme that is seen throughout the entire bible (the whole counsel of God). It is about the natural strengths and abilities that God gives as gifts to each one of us. He then
gives us the opportunity to choose to use them as part of His grand kingdom plan or strategy. It is like a huge chess match and He is the ultimate Chess Master.

Just as it is when we play chess today, in the army of the LORD every piece of the board has special abilities and

God’s Unending Patience
In today’s scripture we will read some important words that God said to the nation of Israel as a promise to them. He promised that He was going to rescue and save them from their calamities. Ultimately He repeatedly assured them that they were very special to Him and that He was
with them. He was going to re-gather them from being scattered and disbursed so that they could once again have intimate communion with Him. Because of all of this, they should not be afraid.

The passage that we will read today comes at the beginning of chapter 43 of the book of

Strength from Weakness
“Counter-intuitiveness” is a theme that can be consistently seen throughout all of the lessons that Jesus taught to His followers. The way that we naturally view and respond to situations is generally the opposite of the way that they are done in the kingdom of God. There is a
reason for this as we will see in a few moments. For example, when our instincts tell us to move, we should be still… when we are often moved to speak, we should actually listen… when our emotions tell us to be angry and to lash out, we should respond with compassion, patience

Loving God – The Essence of the Law
This is the theme that the Lord gave me for today. What does it look like to be a law-abiding citizen in the kingdom of God? Well, it is obviously someone who is very diligent at obeying the law and rejecting criminal activity. In Matthew chapter 22 Jesus was engaged in a debate
with some Pharisees about the law. When one of the “law experts” asked Him which was the greatest commandment of the law, Jesus responded with the following famous quote based on Deuteronomy chapter 6:

37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

Change Is Underway
In yesterday’s devotional, I mentioned that the LORD is the Alpha and the Omega and that He is the agent of change between the two. I have also made several references recently to Psalms 46, the sons of Korah and how the LORD made a new beginning out of what began as rebellion
and God’s judgment. We rebel against God when (by our nature) we insist on being in control (of ourselves, others around us and even God when we pray to Him). This rebellion comes at a cost to us as change is under way.

Yesterday the Lord pointed me to a famous reference in the
