🧵A short thread on some Parliamentary geekery.

I said yesterday in the Debate that I would use every opportunity to vote against the Rwanda Bill - that includes votes not held in public view.

Let me introduce you to the Reasons Committee...
The Reasons Committee meets in a small room behind the Speaker's chair, called the Reasons Room (obviously).

The purpose is to approve the reasons that the Commons (in actuality, the Government) have rejected the Amendments from the Lords.

They don't need to be good reasons... LORDS AMENDMENT 8 8_ After Clause 5, insert the following new Clause— “Removals to Rwanda under the Illegal Migration Act 2023 Within 60 days of the day on which this Act is passed, the Secretary of State must lay before Parliament a statementreferring to all individuals whose asylum claims have been deemed inadmissible since the granting of Royal Assent to the Illegal Migration Act 2023, confirming— (a) the number of such individuals due to be removed to the Republic of Rwanda under the Rwanda Treaty, (b) the timetable for these removals, and (c) the arrangements in place for any such indi...
Given my opposition to the Rwanda Bill, I wanted to put on record in the Reasons Committee my objection to these very thin reasons to reject the Lords Amendments.

This meant forcing ten further votes in the Committee on 18th of March. Labour abstained.

We then got to Monday this week, when the Tories had voted down the next bunch of Lords Amendments to the Rwanda Bill.

So I registered my objection in the Reasons Room again:

When we got to the Lords Amendments on Rwanda last night, I was wondering if there was more I could do.

You can't change the way the Commons voted, so I asked the Clerks if I could amend the reasons. It was, so of course I did:

Labour abstained. Again.

The reality is, as I've said on multiple occasions, the Rwanda Bill is irredeemably awful, tantamount to state-sponsored people trafficking.

It will return from the Lords again next week, there will be the same public and private pantomime with vote, amendments and crap reasons.
I know at least that I and my @theSNP colleagues have done all in our power to vote it down.

The Tories are hell-bent on carrying on with this plan, and it remains to be seen if Labour will repeal this legislation.

It does not represent Scotland's values: not in our name. /End

The number of children affected by the UK Tory Government's two child limit goes up every year.

No one can predict how life will run - especially given the pandemic - and it is completely unfair to penalise the minority of families who have more than two children. #AllKidsCount
Last year, @BPAS1968 found that the Tories Two Child Limit was forcing women into terminating a healthy pregnancy. This should be headline news, it's utterly chilling. #AllKidsCount #2ChildLimit

And of course, that's not an option for many who decide to carry on with a pregnancy, who would not consider abortion for religious or moral reasons.

No woman should be forced into an abortion for reasons of poverty caused by Government policy. #AllKidsCount #2ChildLimit

For anyone who is still wondering why I'm frustrated at the UK Government on drug consumption rooms - this was a year ago at PMQs. It's in their power to change the legal framework.
This was over a year ago, when I presented a 10 minute rule bill, in an attempt to answer the issue of legal framework. To date, no @ukhomeoffice Minister has agreed to meet with me to discuss it.

This is from back in October 2016, when @GCHSCP approved plans for drug consumption rooms - which the UK Government have consistently refused to grant.
