I am glad I’ve opened twitter this morning and saw what the current discourse is:
The oppression of Sefaradim in the US by Ashkenazim.
Finally, I can vent my horrible pain and discuss my daily oppressions; a thread.
Just now, I woke up and tried to get a decent cup of coffee. Not a single place actually prepares Turkish coffee! Not a single bakery offers fejouela, you can’t find any decent baklava, and what they called burekas is an abomination.
You start your day and it’s ruined already.
We are getting closed to Shabbat, so you know, maybe I should do some shopping?
Oh, wait, unless I’m willing to pay over $50 I’ll get some boutargue and it’s going to be already dry! And forget about finding Arak, it’s all grain alcohol with anise flavor! And no bukha!
You might complain I’m being too fancy, but it’s not like I can buy any decent matbucha anywhere, I can’t walk in a caterer and get fried fish in red sauce, and in general it’s not like anyone here knows that cumin, turmeric or paprika are a thing!
It’s a daily nightmare!
Even if I try to forget about it, I’m going to walk in synagogue and instead of having an old man in the corner who shushes everyone and makes sure the minyan davens at the exact speed with the exact piyout he grew up in in Meknes in 1938, people are just rushing through prayer!
And do you know how much I’ve had to pay chiropractors for back problems because of how many times I’m primed and ready for barechu at the end of Maariv and then it just never happens except on Friday night?
And don’t get me started on Friday night
People invite you to their house for Shabbat, but no one serves salmon, there’s no phtkeila anywhere, I don’t think anyone here can spell couscous or has ever heard of apricots. If you ask for cigars, they look at you like you’re a crazy person who wants to smoke at their table
Oh and if by any chance you went to a Henna, they’ll spend the entire meal starting at your hand wondering why you haven’t washed them properly. There’s not even a faint dafina smell to make you feel better. It’s pure absolute torture.
And not one of them can sing Judeo-Arabic.
Pesach is coming and I’m gonna be alone muttering chad gadiya in the corner. They’ll look at me like I’m insane when I do bibilou. And they don’t have a single old lady who is going to open up their house for mimouna.
I can’t even think about the Shavuot “desserts” coming up…
The oppression of Sefaradim in America is truly a tale of cosmic horror, where every moment piles on oppression after oppression until we can’t take it anymore
I will now put on some Samy el Maghrebi and reflect on living through some of the hardest times Jews ever lived through

I guess we’re about to witness sizeable crowds of non-Iranian Americans demonstrate in favor of Khameini’s evil dictatorship…
This country’s entire education system needs to be razed to the ground & rebuilt in a way where this won’t happen again, or there won’t be a country.
It’s perfectly fine to be reflexively antiwar, that’s not what I’m decrying.
What I’m decrying is the reflexively embracing the enemies of America, Israel and the West as inherently good due to the fact that they are our enemies.
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.
Yes, America, Israel and the West has a whole have plenty of sins and did plenty of bad things worldwide.
Anyone who believes that Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and the Houthis are a better replacement are utterly mad, just as bad as those who think Russia or China would be.
First of all, there is no united Haredi community. It really is a constellation of groups that are loosely connected.
Chabad is nothing like Satmar which is nothing like Ponovich which is nothing like the Mir which is nothing like Slobodka which is nothing like Lakewood, etc.
For people, we might externally look similar, but we immediately pick up on cultural signifiers that others have no idea matter. From the type of hats to how you wear your socks, everything about your outfit will tell people within the Haredi world which subgroup you belong to.
Whenever I make a post about Jews being victims of antisemitism and it takes off, the same phenomenon happens with Jew haters:
Half are saying it’s justified & half are saying it’s not happening.
What’s fascinating is just how angry both of those groups are at the idea it is.
I never see that in any other posts that have to do with any other groups or ethnicities being hated. No virulent denial that it’s happening
Some people might be downplaying it or say the OP is making a bigger deal out of it than it deserves, but no “It’s not happening at all”
Same goes with the people acting with anger & glee saying that the group deserves it
That’s not to say that there are not random troll posts who might be individually saying it, but here I’m talking about hundreds of tweets one after the other saying variations of the same thing
Jews kicked out of theaters. Jewish hospitals picketed. Jewish businesses vandalized. Jews insulted & assaulted for being visibly Jewish.
I'm not surprised that this is happening.
I'm surprised at how quickly it was normalized and deemed unworthy of mention in the public square
In a sense, I shouldn't be.
I spent years on this platform discussing how Orthodox Jews were by far the biggest victimized group in America per capita, which was completely ignored as our schools and way of life was under attack from the likes of the New York Times & NY State.
You could have an average of 2 or 3 Orthodox Jews assaulted a week, and we'd get maybe a small mention a year throughout newspapers, and none by pols.
However, if in the lower East Side someone tagged a graffiti targeting non-Orthodox Jews it still made the news pre-October 7th.
There are many videos such as these. Look at their jubilation at the news that toddlers had been massacred, the elderly beaten to death, women assaulted and murdered, the mutilations, and all of the other horrors Hamas inflicted on the victims of 10/7
Hamas is fully enmeshed with civilians all over Khan Yunis, and the population more than willingly allows them to use their homes, businesses, schools and hospitals to store weapons, commit attacks against soldiers, and even booby-trap them.
