I have a genuine question for non-Jews, but I hope we can have a mature & respectful discussion as I’m not trying to say anything inflammatory. It’s an outgrowth of the last thread about Orthodox Judaism’s view, and I’m genuinely interested in the ramifications.

Here we go:

Isn’t the treatment of Xianity by Islam far more theologically problematic than Judaism’s?

In Judaism we flat out say ‘We both believe in G-d, but we don’t agree on the identity/details.’

In Islam, it’s not simply a question of rejecting the identity/details, but outright denial of the crucifixion, death on the cross, and resurrection while simultaneously relegating him as 100% human and subordinate to someone they see as more perfect.

As a Jew, I know that I personally consider it far worse to take the Jewish Bible and rewrite it, versus adding books to it that I do not consider valid as canon. Or is it a case of partial acceptance and therefore it’s not considered theologically as bad? And before anyone interjects with “But, in the Talmud it says…,” please read the following two wonderful articles by @GilStudent that will demonstrate how memes on the internet are there to mislead, not educate:

If someone is not familiar with Judaism, rather than pontificating on it, they should ask those who are.

For Jews, their beliefs are entirely considered idolatry. The G-d who took us out of Egypt is not a man.

For non-Jews, it is shittuf, an association. A theological mistake. According to the majority of decisors in Jewish law, we believe non-Jews who have embraced the gospels truly want to be monotheists, it’s simply that they were lead astray from proper beliefs but ultimately their meaning is not idolatry, and that’s why it’s not qualified as such.

I am all for seeing the children of Jewish fathers & non-Jewish mothers being treated nicely and welcomed by the Jewish community if they want to learn about their paternal heritage.

Treating them decently doesn’t mean we have to rewrite either Torah or history, however: We are a nation, and there are rules as far as how to become fully fledged members of said nation. Until 1983, no one worldwide denied the fact that it was either through a conversion through Jewish law or a Jewish mother to be considered a Jew. Others were known as ‘Zera Israel’

Every oven could burn 2-3 bodies at a time, and it took 20-30 minutes to burn a body. There were 30 ovens in Crematoria II and III in Auschwitz. Assuming they ran continuously, this means the range would be between (2b
X 2hh X 30 X 24) and (3B X 3tm X 30 X 24), 2880 and 6480/day. Make it an average of 4,680 a day. They were operational for almost two years.

That means that with only those two crematorium, assuming they were burning bodies 24/7, in two years they could have cremated:

3,416,400 bodies

That’s not taking in account IV, V and open air pits

The landlord was entirely right to say that it wouldn’t be committing infidelity due to her not being Jewish.

However… (a 🧵) by my count, he’s guilty of at least 5 if not 7 different sins, and could be a candidate for a Pinchas to treat him like a Zimri.

They are:
- Intermarriage
- Kedushat Yisrael
- Zera levatala
- Lifnei Ever
- Moral Corruption
- Adultery (possibly)
- Chillul Hashem (possibly)

Pretty easy

1) Zionism, not Israel, was a largely ashkenazi project. In Eretz Yisrael prior to Zionism, Sefaradi Jews were the majority, thus the majority culture. Sefaradim were the only ones allowed to live in/visit Jerusalem, so even Ashkenazi religious Jews adopted the garb. 2) Zionists wanted to shed anything in their identity that wasn’t ’Hebrew,’ so they stopped speaking Yiddish, or Polish, or Hungarian, or Russian, and switched it all for Hebrew. They left all of their prior cultural markers behind and adopted new ones to reinvent themselves.

“Jews refusing to write xianity fully or calling him yoshke instead of his name just shows how much Jews secretly hates him/us.”

A short thread debunking these notions. For starters, Judaism demands for Jews to be careful with words. This is why, for example, you will see Orthodox Jews online and elsewhere write “G-d” instead of the full name, or “L-rd,” or even if transliterating, replace certain letters and write Elokim, Eloka, Kel, or Hashem.

Here’s the reality:

It’s not Jews who are against xianity, it’s secularists & atheists (some of whom happen to be Jewish)

In Judaism itself, we do not care about xianity, it doesn’t hold a special place in our theology for good or for bad. It’s simply a non-factor in what we do Don’t get me wrong: it is forbidden for a Jew to share those beliefs, but this is no different than it being forbidden for someone who claims to be of your religion to spurn belief in the trinity or the divinity of a human being.

You say it’s necessary, we say it’s forbidden.

Did you know that “ghetto” is not only element of Jewish history that was culturally appropriated by the rap community? Far from it!

Turns out, pouring a 40 in memory of your deceased chavruta (old timey homie) was a common practice in Talmudic times: Image Though poorly translated, zilzouf means (perfuming by) pouring wine. It was done according to some on the bier itself, and others in front of it, as a sign of respect for the deceased.

Keep in mind that in Talmudic times, “wine” was routinely 40% to 50% alcohol, too.

This is beautiful:

Even though she describes herself as secular, had nothing to do with Judaism all her life to the point where refers to the Jewish Bible as the OT/ doesn’t realize OT doesn’t equate Torah, the first thing she tells the world in her profile is that she’s a Jew. Not only does she announce her Jewishness for the world to see (despite little to no connection to Judaism/Jewishness according to her own words), but she also dedicated her life to pursuing justice and making the world a better place in the name of her Jewishness.

For the sake of disclosure, here are my politics:

G-d runs the world, and I want Mashiach now.

On election day, I first go to mikveh, put on my kapota, and wear my gartel to vote. That’s because the Rebbe told us it’s our duty to vote. Otherwise, I wouldn’t in the first place. I wouldn’t vote because while I can find points I agree with most political parties, I can find many more points I vehemently disagree with.

I believe in individuals and communities, not parties, tribes or factions.

And most importantly, that G-d chooses who rules over us.

I’m fuming to the point I’ve got a migraine.

One of my students was just assaulted on his way to yeshiva. A black man in his 40s smacked him across the face for no reason other than hate.

Thankfully, he got away before anything else happened.

What makes most angry about this? I told him we needed to file a police report; he mentioned that a couple of blocks later he saw an NYPD car but never even thought of stopping to tell them.

Why?

“What are they gonna do? Even if they catch him, it’s not like anything’s gonna happen to him, he won’t go to jail”

I don’t scoff at people’s experiences in general, but I have to say that if you sleep with four dogs in your bed and wake up one night with claw marks all over your side, your initial assumption should probably be that one of the dogs did it versus, you know, a demon. Then the next route would probably be to investigate if you have REM sleep disorder, or if the wife sleeping your bed does.

Either way, if you want to say something like that and be considered credible by people, having documented the marks to show the word would go a long way.

Another day, another debunking of fake Talmudic quotes and assertions about Torah.

A thread on Genders & Judaism 🧵 Disclaimers:

1) I have no interest getting into any political discussion, nor into modern issues related to gender, LGBTQ+ issues or anything of the sort. This is only about correcting the egregious lies posted by antisemites about the Torah, Talmud, and Judaism as a whole.

Scolding the youth, telling them “we tried to instill in you [things detached from Judaism], but we did not intend for you to [be detached from Judaism]” isn’t gonna be successful.

If you tell a kid kosher just means ethical eating, don’t be surprised when he becomes a vegan. You told them that what mattered most was social justice, humanism, activism, and the brotherhood of man. And social justice told them Jews are white privileged colonizers who oppress the indigenous Palestinians in a land that doesn’t belong to them.

And now you’re appalled?

On Shabbat I read a small piece of Torah that absolutely set me on fire. It is mind-blowing in its simplicity and elegance, and completely reframes your view of a Biblical narrative in a way you can’t comprehend how it’s not how you’ve always seen it.

A short thread: One of the most puzzling questions in all of Bereshit is simply:

What is Yitshak’s deal when it comes to Esav?

By all accounts, he seems to have a pretty rotten behavior, attempts to trick his father by pretending to be pious, etc.

Yet, Yitshak never relents. Why?

Jews have long been plagued by the idea that they are doing Judaism just right.

It’s creating a lot of unnecessary tensions, especially in the age of social media.

A short thread on this old phenomenon: Most members of our community are plagued with the same two beliefs. They are:

“Every Jew who is more strict than me is a crazy zealot!”

while simultaneously believing

“Every Jew who is more lenient than me is a heretic!”
