The Special Gifting and Power of the Knight
This is a continuation of my recent devotional about the similarities of the kingdom of God and His plan with the game of chess. In that devotional, I discussed how even though the pawn is generally considered to be the weakest and most expendable piece on the chess board, it
actually has a very powerful gift and capability that no other piece can do. It has the power to redeem (or to free) other captured pieces. The knight also has a unique capability that is an image of a biblical gift that is given in the kingdom of God.

The knight is very limited
in where it can move on the board. It can move in any direction using a very small L-shaped pattern. But the knight can also do something that no other piece can do… it is not limited by other pieces that block it and it can jump over them. This is something that no other piece
on the board can do. This gives the knight a unique “vision” of the board that is not limited only by what it can see in front of or around it. Like the Master who is executing the chess strategy, the knight can see through and penetrate enemy lines and obstacles (even obstacles
from its own team). This is similar to the gifts that we see in the bible when the LORD created “seers” which were prophets who had the ability to see beyond what others saw. They had a vision of the kingdom plan that was similar to (although not as comprehensive
or as powerful as) that of the LORD.

For example, John was called by Jesus to follow Him as one of the 12 disciples. Jesus told all of these disciples about what was going to happen in His ultimate plan so that they would not be afraid of what they saw. But as part of his
special ministry, John was given the gift and opportunity to actually see and document the final conflict and resolution. Like the knight on the chess board, John’s special vision behind the enemy lines is used to give the other warriors on the board insight and at times
protection from blind spots and potential attacks. The knight can see and neutralize threats that no one else on the board can see. And he does all of these things using that very limited, yet powerful maneuverability (that 3-step L move). When his gifts are submitted to the
Chess Master, he is another very powerful component of the army of the LORD.

So we pray today that the LORD would grant to us the ability to see the unique gifts that He has given to each one of us. Then may He grant us the understanding of how to surrender our gifts to Him so
that He can use them for the unique purposes that He has also given to each one of us in His grand kingdom plan. Finally, LORD give us the vision to see what we can not see with our own capabilities. Help us to hear and to understand
what the Spirit and the seers are saying today.

Now for today’s scripture, we will see how John was introduced in his role as a seer at the beginning of the book of Revelation.

Introduction and Benediction
1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His
servants—things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, 2 who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw. 3 Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this
prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near. - Revelation 1:1-3

Not Everything Is as It Seems – Giving Thanks
Today’s scripture says that we should give thanks to the LORD… the title of this psalm is about giving thanks to Him. But notice how this psalm starts out in verse 1 with a call for us all to give Him thanks. After it starts with this call, it describes a bunch of problems that
came along and then says that the LORD rescued them from those problems. Finally it ends in the last two verses (9-10) calling once again for everyone to give thanks to the LORD.

This seems like it is emphasizing the need to be grateful saints and to thank Him for rescuing us.

The LORD – The Ultimate Chess Master
I have been contemplating and pondering this special message for the past several days. It is about a theme that is seen throughout the entire bible (the whole counsel of God). It is about the natural strengths and abilities that God gives as gifts to each one of us. He then
gives us the opportunity to choose to use them as part of His grand kingdom plan or strategy. It is like a huge chess match and He is the ultimate Chess Master.

Just as it is when we play chess today, in the army of the LORD every piece of the board has special abilities and

God’s Unending Patience
In today’s scripture we will read some important words that God said to the nation of Israel as a promise to them. He promised that He was going to rescue and save them from their calamities. Ultimately He repeatedly assured them that they were very special to Him and that He was
with them. He was going to re-gather them from being scattered and disbursed so that they could once again have intimate communion with Him. Because of all of this, they should not be afraid.

The passage that we will read today comes at the beginning of chapter 43 of the book of

Strength from Weakness
“Counter-intuitiveness” is a theme that can be consistently seen throughout all of the lessons that Jesus taught to His followers. The way that we naturally view and respond to situations is generally the opposite of the way that they are done in the kingdom of God. There is a
reason for this as we will see in a few moments. For example, when our instincts tell us to move, we should be still… when we are often moved to speak, we should actually listen… when our emotions tell us to be angry and to lash out, we should respond with compassion, patience

Loving God – The Essence of the Law
This is the theme that the Lord gave me for today. What does it look like to be a law-abiding citizen in the kingdom of God? Well, it is obviously someone who is very diligent at obeying the law and rejecting criminal activity. In Matthew chapter 22 Jesus was engaged in a debate
with some Pharisees about the law. When one of the “law experts” asked Him which was the greatest commandment of the law, Jesus responded with the following famous quote based on Deuteronomy chapter 6:

37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

Change Is Underway
In yesterday’s devotional, I mentioned that the LORD is the Alpha and the Omega and that He is the agent of change between the two. I have also made several references recently to Psalms 46, the sons of Korah and how the LORD made a new beginning out of what began as rebellion
and God’s judgment. We rebel against God when (by our nature) we insist on being in control (of ourselves, others around us and even God when we pray to Him). This rebellion comes at a cost to us as change is under way.

Yesterday the Lord pointed me to a famous reference in the
