Wishing all an auspicious #HanumanJayanthi. On this occasion taking a look at one of his forms Panchamukha Hanuman, a representation of him, showing 5 faces, in different directions. It is based on the incident in Ramayana, where Hanuman assumes the form to kill, Ahiravana, the king of Pathala, and Ravan’s brother.Image
Apparently when Indrajit was killed, and Ravan was losing the battle against Ram, he summoned his brother Ahiravan, to help him out, who promised to capture Ram and Laxman alive, take them to his kingdom, where he would sacrifice them to the Goddess Mahamaya.
Vibhishan, having got wind of Ahiravan's plans, informs Ram and Laxman of this, and asks Hanuman to keep guard over them. He also warns Hanuman, that Ahiravan is a master of disguise, and to be careful of any trickery.
Ahiravan tries to enter the place, where Ram and Laxman are sleeping, in various disguises, but Hanuman manages to thwart him. Finally he assumes the disguise of Vibhishan himself, and having fooled Hanuman, he enters the place and manages to carry them away to Pataal Lok.
When Hanuman finds he has been tricked by Ahiravan, he vows to Vibhishan, that he would find Ram and Laxman, and kill Ahiravan. And goes down into the Patala Loka, where he finds Ahiravan's massive palace, that is heavily guarded on all sides.
He first has to contend with the guard, Makardhwaja, who is half Vanara, half fish, and also happens to be Hanuman's son in a way too.

There is a backstory of when he is travelling over the ocean to Lanka, a drop of sweat, which falls from him, is swallowed by a fish. It is believed that Makardhwaja, is a result of that union.

After defeating his son, he makes his way into Mahiravan's palace.
He learns that the way to kill Mahiravan is to extinguish 5 different lamps in different directions. This is when Hanuman assumes his Panchamukha Anjaneya form here, the 5 faces being those of

Anjaneya- Facing East grants Ishta Siddhi.

Karala Ugraveera Narasimha- Facing South, grants Abhishta Siddhi

Mahaveera Garuda- Facing West, grants Sakala Soubhagya.

Lakshmi Varaha- Facing North, grants Dhana Prapthi.

Hayagriva-known as the Urdhva Mukha( facing upwards), grants Sarva Vidya Jaya PrapthiImage
He assumed this form to blow out the 5 lamps, and then kill Ahiravana. It’s believed to represent Hanuman’s mastery over the 5 senses or Pancha Indriya, and also association with the Pancha Bhoota(5 elements).

The son of Vayu( wind), who crossed Sagara( water), through Akasha( sky), met the daughter of Bhoodevi( Earth), Sita and then burnt down Lanka by Agni( Fire).
Also there are 5 forms of prayer to Hanuman Naman, Smaran, Keerthanam, Yachanam and Arpanam, which depict the five faces.

It is also believed to represent the following quote from the Gita.

He who acts for me, who is engrossed in me, who is my devotee, who is free from attachment, he reaches me.

It is believed that Panchamukha Hanuman embodies all these 5 qualities, each face representing one of them.
Its believed that Hanuman appeared in this form to Shri Raghavendra Swamy of Mantralayam, and the Panchamukhi Anjaneyaswamy temple is located here at the spot where he did penance.

Mokshagundam Viswesarayya, one of the builders of modern India, an engineering genius, and one of the greatest Indians of modern era, founder of the modern Mysore State, whose legacy lives on todate.

Every where you go in Mysore region, you can find his legacy, be it the mighty Krishna Raja Sagar Dam or institutions like State Bank of Mysore or the Bhadravati Steel Factory.Image
He was born in Mudenahalli, now located in Chikballapur district on Sept 15,1861 to Srinivasa Sastry and (Venkachamma) Venkatalakshmamma. His father was a well known Sanskrit scholar, from whom he learnt to respect the culture and traditions of Bharat.
When he came to Bangalore for higher education at the Central College, he had no funds nor a place to stay. Fortunately a well off Kodava family there, hired him as a tutor for their children, which gave him a place to stay, as also earn while studying.

Anant Lakshman Kanhere was hanged to death on this date in 1910 for the asssasination of Collector Jackson in Nashik. He was just 18, one of the youngest martyrs in the history of the revolutionary movement.

It was in connection with this assasination, that Veer Savarkar was convicted, on the basis that he wrote an article Martyrs of Nashik prasing him.Image
Born on January 7, 1892 to a Chitpavan Brahmin family in a small village of Ratnagiri dt, Kanhere would grow up in Nizamabad where he completed his schooling, and later studied in Aurangabad, where he began to meet members of secret revolutionary societies.
Arthur Jackson was the collector of Nashik since 1907, a mild mannered man, proficient in Sanskrit and Marathi.  Also a learned Indologist, who wrote many papers on Indian history and culture, affectionately called as  Pandit Jackson by the locals.

Fond of the beauty of the Godavari, and the richness of Sanskrit, he often felt that he must have been a Shastri at Nashik in his earlier life.

Jayanti of Kandukuri Veeresalingam Pantulu, regarded as the father of Modern Telugu literature, social reformer, activist, writer, the quintessential Renaissance man. Image
While the Bengali renaissance is well known and discussed, one aspect that has often not really got the due attention is the way it impacted reform movements in other parts of India.

The work done by Brahmo leaders like Raja Rammohun Roy, Keshav Chandra Sen and reformers like Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, began to spread to other parts. Kandukuri Veeresalingam was one among them, deeply influenced by Keshav Chandra Sen
Consider his contribution, the first person to conduct a widow remarriage in Andhra Pradesh, the first to start a co-educational school here. And as a writer, the first Telugu novelist, the first autobiography in Telugu, the first to write a history on Telugu poets.

He also translated scientific works to Telugu. Started a social welfare organization called Hitakarini for which he donated his entire property. And if that was not enough, he also carried out a crusade against corruption in Government.

While we know of the great Ranas- Kumbha, Sanga and Pratap, not much is known of the founder of the Sisodia dynasty, the first Rana of Mewar, Rana Hammir Singh aka Veer Hammir. A hero who bought back the glory of Mewar after it was devastated by Allaudin Khilji.
Image
Image
Rana Hammir in a way began the next phase of Rajput rule of Mewar with Chittorgarh as the capital that started in 1326 and ended in 1568, when Rana Udai Singh II, had to flee after Akbar occupied the fort.
Hammir’s ancestor was Laksha Singh, a very distant clan relative of  Rawal Ratan Singh, who fought during the siege of Chittorgarh by Allauddin Khilji in 1303.  Whent it was inevitable, that Chittorgarh would fall, Laksha decided that one of his 9 sons would live to fight for another day.
But who would it be?

While Mewar had many great rulers, if I had to choose the greatest of them all, it would be Rana Kumbha, the ancestor of Rana Sanga and Maharana Pratap.

The 15th century had some formidable opponents to the Delhi Sultanate, Kapilendra Deva in Kalinga, Deva Raya II in Vijayanagar, Man Singh Tomar in Gwalior and above all Rana Kumbha, a giant of a personality, both physically and metaphorically.Image
Kumbha initially had good support from Ranmal Rathore of Mandore. His main battles though would be against Mahmud Khilji the Malwa Sultan who laid siege to Chittorgarh, multiple times.

In Nov 1442, Khilji laid siege and captured Pangarh and Chaumuha and encamped there. In the summer of 1443, Rana Kumbha attacked the Sultan’s camp forcing him to retreat to Mandu.
The Sultan again made an attempt to capture Chittorgarh in 1443 but was again forced to retreat, by a spirited counter attack from Rana Kumbha.  The Sultan again made a final attempt in 1446 at Mandalgarh along with the Sultan of Gujarat, Ahmad Shah, but had to taste defeat again. For the next decade, the Malwa Sultan, did not attack Chittorgarh again.

Operation Meghdoot, the Indian Army operation to secure Siachen glacier, takes place on this date in 1984. One of the greatest military ops in history of Indian army. Image
Siachen, which ironically means “Rose Garden” in local Balti language, located in Eastern Karakoram, is 75 km long, and is the highest battlefield in the world. The 110 KM line beyond NJ9842 is called the Actual Position Ground Line.

The genesis of the Siachen conflict lay in Partition, after the first Indo-Pak war, the 2 nations agreed on the ceasefire line. The problem is that the line was not demarcated beyond a point NJ9842, as it was an inhospitable areaImage
The agreement simply said that the beyond NJ9842, the line would run North of the glaciers, which included Siachen, Rimo and Baltoro. It was believed that no military operations would take place there at those inhospitable areas, and both sides, did not care much about it.

After the ’71 war, as per the 1972 Shimla Agreement, this ceasefire line became the LOC, and once again the Siachen glacier was left out. As it was considered an inhospitable area, no attempt was made to enforce jurisdiction over it.Image
