Why should the US support Ukraine?

On April 20, the US Congress made a historic decision to support Ukraine in its fight for freedom. Still, there were many who opposed this decision. So, let’s discuss why supporting Ukraine is directly alighted with the US interests.

2/ It is the right thing to do. Seeing a genocide and doing nothing is a sign of moral bankruptcy. To quote Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”
3/ The fight for freedom. The founding fathers of the US stated that liberty and freedom are the core American values. This is what America is known for in the world. And this is exactly what the Ukrainians are fighting for. They are fighting for freedom.
4/ Standing against tyranny and dictatorship. America always had a strong stance against dictators. By stopping russian imperialistic ambitions we are preventing other future tyrannical attempts in the world.
5/ Budapest Memorandum. In 1994, Ukraine agreed to relinquish its nuclear arsenal in exchange for the security assurances from the US, the UK, and russia. Obviously, russia has violated this as well as dozens of other agreements. But the US is not russia, and we keep our promises
6/ According to Steven Pifer, a US diplomat who participated in the talks: “there is an obligation on the United States that flows from the Budapest Memorandum to provide assistance to Ukraine, and […] that would include lethal military assistance.”
7/ Strengthening NATO. Because of Ukrainian resistance to russia, a US-lead alliance has been strengthened by increased military commitments from its existing allies and addition of new allies, such as Finland and Sweden.
8/ Return on investment. At the small fraction of NATO defense budget, the russian military has been cut in half! Money spent on assisting Ukraine allows the US to debilitate one of its key adversaries without risking the life of a single American soldier.
9/ Investing in American companies. When the US sends HIMARS or any other military equipment to Ukraine, American companies benefit from it. Weapon supplies from the US generate new orders for American companies. By supplying Ukraine, the US is supporting its own military complex
10/ American and world security. Ukrainian victory over Russia will do more for American and world security than virtually any other policy. It will change the global balance in a way that makes peace more likely in decades to come.
11/ By punishing and defeating Russia, the scenario for a US-China war in case of Chinese invasion of Taiwan will become very unlikely.

Russia is following the footsteps of Nazis. This is not a photoshop, but russian rehearsal for the May 9 Victory Day parade. Note the armbands. The same armbands were worn last year.

2/ Don't take this from me, take it from many renowned historians like Timothy Snyder, who point out that russia is same fascist state as was Nazi Germany:
- The same invasions and imperialism
- The same racism and nationalism
3/ - The same “protect ethnic Germans / russians” excuse to invade others
- The same abduction and indoctrination of children
- The same propaganda
- The same war crimes

A brilliant response by Timothy Snyder to Marjorie Taylor Greene’s accusation of Nazis in Ukraine. As a leading scholar on the subject of nationalism, Snyder makes three points:

2/ No far right party has ever crossed more than 3% barrier in any Ukrainian elections.
3/ On the other hand, russian army includes openly Nazi formations.

What made Speaker Mike Johnson change his mind about Ukraine?

Mike Johnson has been stalling Ukrainian aid for months, each time giving a different excuse. But yesterday, he came with a very clear message, condemning russia and expressing his support of Ukraine. Why?

2/ I think I might have an explanation. Last week, I wrote that one of the reasons the US is more willing to help Israel than Ukraine is that Israel has a very strong and systematic lobby in the US. For example, there are strong religious ties with the Protestant community.
3/ Ukraine needs to build the same strong lobby, working systematically with congressmen, organizations, churches, and communities. Several days ago, a large group of Ukrainian representatives came to Washington, DC with that very mission.

A painful truth: the US has never been a true ally of Ukraine and their policy towards Ukraine is hypocritical and cruel.

2/ Last night, the US intercepted over a hundred Iranian missiles and drones directed at Israel. It was the right thing to do. But it also showed one simple and painful truth. The US has never been a true ally of Ukraine.
3/ Every day russia attacks Ukraine. And Ukrainian “allies” don’t give nearly enough weapons for Ukraine to defend itself. They don’t even shoot down the russian rockets that fly directly into the NATO territory, because those rockets are “directed at Ukraine.”

There is no neutrality in the face of evil.

The russian war and genocide against Ukrainians have changed me. The russians killed three of my friends; they have beheaded, castrated, raped, tortured thousands of my countrymen; they have destroyed the livelihood of millions.

2/ I used to be much more tolerant and accepting of different points of view. But now, my vision is more black and white. The war became personal. The pain became personal.
3/ When you are bombed every night for 2 years straight and have your country invaded, it is personal. I think everyone of us has lost someone, either on the battlefield or when the russian rockets and drones bombed civilian infrastructure.

A video of a Ukrainian pastor preaching to an empty church building destroyed by russians. He says that at one point of time there were people here who were freely worshiping God. Then he starts crying, because russians have destroyed this place of worship.

2/ This is a reality of the “russian world” - russians are torturing and murdering Ukrainian Christians in occupied territories for their faith. The russian Orthodox Church has already called it a “Holy War” against Ukrainians, blessing the genocide against Ukrainians.
3/ Protestants are targeted disproportionately. American missionaries have been coming to Ukraine for decades. As a result, Protestants make up about 4% of the Ukrainian population. However, they comprise more than a third of the documented incidents of russian persecution.
