Tesla is not going to answer some of these questions but here is my take:

1/10

The hardware for the Optimus Robot is 20% ready and the software is 5% ready. The hardware will likely take 6-9 years and the software 5-10 years to complete. app.saytechnologies.com/tesla-2024-q1

4680 cell production at Giga Texas was operating at 6% capacity on March 20, 2024, when Tesla tweeted that they produce enough 4680 cells for 1,000 Cybertrucks per week. It took Tesla 3 years and 3 months to get to 6% capacity. The plan was to get to 100% in 1 year.

The Cybertruck battery is 122.4 kWh according to EPA documents. 1,000 Cybertrucks per week would require 122,400 kWh/week of batteries.

The design capacity of the 4680 production lines at Giga Texas is 100 GWh/year = 100 million kWh/year = 2 million kWh/week.

Therefore, they were at 122,400/2,000,000 = 6.1% capacity a month ago.Image

Tesla has never conducted any driverless Full Self-Driving (FSD) tests. Such a vehicle would probably require additional hardware, and there would likely be countless unforeseen issues when they begin testing. As a result, it could take 5 to 10 years before they can offer driverless rides to the public.Image
4/10

The compact car's production is delayed due to a lack of batteries. The Panasonic factory in Kansas, currently under construction, will start delivering 2170 cells to Tesla next year.

56% of the batteries from that factory will likely be used for Model 3 production in the US as Tesla needs to switch from cells imported from China to US-made cells to restore the $7,500 tax credit.

The remaining 44% is enough to produce 220,000 compact cars per year at Giga Texas. In theory, Tesla could start production in Q4 2025 with about 3,000 units, increase to 120,000 units in 2026, and reach 220,000 units in 2027, but it's unclear if they want to do that.Image
5/10

No, it's unlikely because Tesla's software is a Level 2 driver-assist system, but the name 'Full Self Driving' has already caused a lot of controversy since it's not truly self-driving. Other manufacturers wouldn't want to be linked to that controversy.

The term 'Full Self Driving' is problematic. Tesla should consider rebranding it as a driver-assist system.Image
6/10

5 years probably, 10 years definitely. Image
7/10

Production was around 700/week at the end of March based on VIN data. At full capacity, it will reach 5,000/week. That means production was running at 14 capacity. I will get new data soon. Image
8/10

It costs Tesla $29,200 to produce a Model 3 Standard range in China. The compact car would most likely cost around $24,000 to produce.

Therefore, Tesla wants to start production in the US instead of China or Europe because there is a $7,500 tax credit in the US. However, battery supply issues have caused some delays.Image
9/10

Yes, that's actually a good idea. Tesla started selling FSD in October 2016, but after all these years, the software is still far from being Full-Self Driving. Therefore, it makes sense to allow the software to be transferred to a new vehicle. Image
10/10

Tesla unveiled the Semi in December 2017, and it's been more than six years since then. Currently, there are two main problems with the Semi:

1. There is no dedicated factory.
2. There is a lack of batteries.

Tesla is about to start building a new factory in Nevada, which is expected to take about two years to complete. However, the situation with batteries remains unclear.Image
Here is the correct question for 5/10: Image
I meant 14% capacity.

Part 1/4

Tesla removed the parking sensors on Oct 1st, 2022 to save money and reduce complexity. The plan was to replace them with Tesla Vision which was not ready yet. 5 months later, the replacement is still not ready.

News on Oct 4, 2022: electrek.co/2022/10/04/tes…
Part 2/4

Parking sensors, also known as ultrasonic sensors or USS, use high-frequency sound waves that reflect back from nearby objects to measure the distance to those objects.

It's a great technology that's available as standard in most economy cars.
Part 3/4

There is a video here by @live_munro that explains there is a 3x1 ft (91x30cm) blind spot in front of the car the cameras can't see. Therefore it's unclear if the Tesla Vision solution will work as well.

Munro estimates Tesla saved $114 per car.

1/ Giga Berlin

Since we are so close to the delivery ceremony tomorrow, here is a summary of Giga Berlin.

The current building has one production line with 500,000 units per year of production capacity. In terms of the building size, this is Tesla's smallest car factory.
2/

The footprint of the Giga Berlin building is
• 77% the size of the Fremont Factory,
• 61% of Giga Texas, and
• 60% of Giga Shanghai

Giga Berlin will eventually produce its own 4680 cells & battery packs but for now, they are getting complete 2170 packs from Giga Shanghai
3/

Giga Shanghai will supply up to 5,000 battery packs per week. Giga Berlin will start production with 1 shift and they will add the second and third shifts in the coming months. The target is to reach 5,000/week Model Y production by the end of this year.

This is interesting. Tesla Autopilot hardware version 4 might be coming soon. When it's released, I would expect all Tesla vehicle production worldwide to switch to HW4 around the same time once they use up existing stock.
Here is some information about Tesla Autopilot hardware versions so far. Image

1/ Giga Berlin thread:

There is a lot of misinformation about Giga Berlin's production capacity. It's not 2M/year or 1.5M/year or 1M/year. Giga Berlin has just a single production line with 500K/year capacity and there is neither any plan nor any space to add a second line.
2/

This line is similar to the Model Y line in Shanghai which produced 38,381 Model Y in Dec 2021 (460,572/year). That was the 12th month of Model Y production in Shanghai.

The Shanghai Model Y line could potentially reach 45K/month = 540K/year. Berlin Model Y should be similar
3/

Of course, it's possible that Berlin could exceed 540K/year and even reach 600K/year one day but that's not guaranteed to happen.

You might say, yes but they will add more buildings to Giga Berlin. Yes they could but the groundworks for the current one started on 17 Feb 2020

Giga Berlin:

1/
The current building at Giga Berlin has just one production line and there is neither space nor any plan to add another line to this building. The line was modeled after Model Y line in Shanghai which produced 38,381 in Dec with 3 shifts. That's 460,572/year.
2/

• On the Alex Springer show, Elon said Giga Berlin's capacity is 500,000/year.

• At Giga Fest, Elon said 10,000/week (500K/year)

• A slide at Giga Fest also showed 500,000/year
3/

The rumors about 2 million units per year originated from this image from Tesla's environmental impact report. It shows eventually 4 buildings. So, people assumed if it's 500K per building, capacity must be 2 million. The problem is, those other buildings don't exist yet.

Tesla Q3 2020 Updates:

1/

• 7-9 July: Final registration numbers for Europe will be released
• 8-12 July: China production & delivery numbers will be released. I use these in my calculations
• 13-15 July: I'll post my first estimate for Q3 2020. It should be between 130-150K
2/

Things to watch out for in Q3 2020:

• Made-in-China Model 3 Long Range has a backlog, most likely over 10K

• Tesla was using the Model 3 GA4 general assembly line for Model Y production. The new Model Y GA5 at Fremont is expected to go online soon.
3/

• I've heard rumors that Tesla produced two Model Y test units in China. There is a chance, Model Y prod could start in Oct or Nov.
• Tesla will likely have excess Model Y production capacity at Fremont in Q4. They could release Model Y SR+ in NA or export Model Y to EU
