The History of DNA and what Rapid DNA Testing means for our future a thread🧵:
- DNA fingerprinting was first used in forensic science in 1986 in the UK to solve a rape case.
-The first person to be convicted on the basis of DNA evidence in the UK was Robert Melias in 1987.
In 1996 the US National Research Council’s (NRC)made a report on DNA evidence stating that, “The state of the profiling technology has progressed to the point where the admissibility of properly collected and analyzed DNA data should not be in doubt”.
The most prominent jobs that deal with DNA evidence are:
-Forensic DNA Analyst
-Forensic Science Technician
-Criminalists
Current research on DNA analysis is focused on Rapid DNA Testing. Their findings were that the duration of the investigation process were significantly reduced in cases where the decentral rapid DNA procedure was deployed, compared to cases where the regular procedure was used.
A current example of a Rapid DNA Test could be a paternity test for disputes such as:
-Custody
-Rights to an inheritance
-Child support claims
In conclusion, Rapid DNA Testing is further our ability to idenitify people based on their DNA in a timely manner without having to wait weeks or months
