Here is a little story about trusting your own taste. Six years ago I saw this painting hanging in the back hallway of a local coffee shop and fell in love with it.
It was like the painter had externalized everything I believe about the relationship between art and science.
I asked the owner if I could buy it and they said they would sell it to me for $700 or $800, I don't remember how much I paid. Somewhere in that range. My husband (then boyfriend) was skeptical but I was like look at the details, it's a masterpiece.
Obviously, it's not signed on the front. I had no idea who the artist was until I took it home and turned it around. I just knew how it made me feel.
After I paid for the painting and took it home, I found out it was painted by Martin Schreiber in 1981. You can learn more about him here: martinschreiberartmaster.com/?section=about…
I had the painting appraised for insurance purposes and it was appraised at between $6,000 and $9,000. Aside from my car, it's the most valuable thing I own.
I always think about this painting when I think about my aspirations for Dirt. I don't care who the hell you are or where you are from or whether you have been published before. Do you have something interesting to say? That's all that matters.
Moral of the story? Taste is our most valuable asset. ❤️🔥
