Eye Spy AI Thread
(Or how to identify Generative AI with your eyes - A Thread ๐งต)
1/10
Introduction: With the current landscape of data trust being at an all-time low, it's become so important to be able to discern real images vs generative AI.
2/10
While we have tools that detect AI-Generated content, they are not the most accurate and contain false negatives and positives.
Your eyes are going to be your most powerful weapon.
3/10
I also want to state I will focus primarily on AI Generated Art. While many of these methods can be used for to detect photorealistic generated images, these techniques are primarily geared towards art.
With all that out of the way...
4/10
Context - This is the golden rule for detection.
"Why is this here?"
"What does this do?"
"How does this work?"
Human artists have intentions with designs, mechanics, and narrative. Generative AI tries to create meaning in form of imitation.

'GenBlends' or Generative AI Blurs are another easy thing to spot. Details such as necklaces and hair blending together with nearby elements to form an amorphous blob.
Line work also often blends with colors with GenAI.
6/10
Eyes are another important detail to look at. Typically GenAI tends to create pupils that bleed out or contorted.
7/10
Clothing detail also goes back to the golden rule of context.
What are these metal details for?
Why is the necktie tied like that?
Why is the button shaped the way it is?
How does this satchel close?
WTF is up with these folds?
Are all questions to be asked.
8/10
Same rules apply to landscape images.
A. Why are they holding the sword like that?
B. What is going on on the roof?
C. What is going on with this gate?
D. How is this roof only partially covered with snow?
E. WTF is going on here?
8/10
And of course if you are ever in doubt... hands are always a solid thing to check.
9/10
Art made by humans is intentional, purposeful. Lighting, narrative, clothing, composition, colors, poses, all of it was with intent.

@jackisfragile With that said, there is definitely snow falling off the top from of these references.
@DrRak314 Also no human artists don't make the same kind of mistakes.
@JasminDarnell And being able to have some tools to help question red flags is a good first step.

Are you an artist? Do you sell at artist alley? You've probably at one point stumbled on this hot mess of a discord server and the really disgusting mods that run this... ๐งต

1/?
So relatively recently AAN discord made some changes for helpers. A lot of helpers had pretty normal questions about the new role adjustment.
2/?
The biggest question everyone had was being able to access con-news channel. The first of the mod answers referred to "legal" reasons. And that helpers had no for access to Con News. As if only the artist themselves are only legally allowed to apply to conventions.
I would argue the ability to problem solve visually is more important than styles. I know for a lot of artists in the game/film/tv industry they typically have to conform to the style of the project.
What makes those artists valuable is their ability to problem solve around the style established. More importantly some studios have a photorealistic style. That's not really a style you can claim as an identity.
Also placing less importance on style puts less stress on ever green artists still trying to find their style and their voice in art.
This extends to the majority of game development. I've been fortunate enough to work in studios that pay me my worth, but I know this is the exception and not the norm for most of my peers. I've had to turn down major projects because of low wage and crunch culture.
Game development needs to unionize. Developers need to be paid their worth(most of our peers in other sectors of the tech industry get paid much higher for the same or less work) and we need end crunch culture.
Require studios to have mandatory vacation days so developers can catch a breathe and recharge.
Ensure and require employees to disconnect from work after hours.
Upper management needs to stop falling back on crunch as a planning option.
