I would argue the ability to problem solve visually is more important than styles. I know for a lot of artists in the game/film/tv industry they typically have to conform to the style of the project. What makes those artists valuable is their ability to problem solve around the style established. More importantly some studios have a photorealistic style. That's not really a style you can claim as an identity.

This extends to the majority of game development. I've been fortunate enough to work in studios that pay me my worth, but I know this is the exception and not the norm for most of my peers. I've had to turn down major projects because of low wage and crunch culture. Game development needs to unionize. Developers need to be paid their worth(most of our peers in other sectors of the tech industry get paid much higher for the same or less work) and we need end crunch culture.
