Today we've published our report on bus-stop bypasses in London 📃

Our analysis shows a very low risk of collisions between pedestrians and cyclists.

But we know there's work to do to improve designs and cyclist behaviour.

Bus-stop bypasses are used around the world to facilitate safe cycling on bus routes 🚲🚌

We cannot deliver safe cycling infrastructure without them.

Stopping their use would put cyclists' lives at risk, including disabled cyclists who use bikes as mobility aids.
Our review found that just 4 collisions took place at bus-stops between cyclists and pedestrians from 2020-22 - none on the crossing.

For context, over 11,400 pedestrians and 15,000 cyclists were injured in collisions with motor vehicles in the same period.
We are committed to working with all stakeholders to make everyone's transport experience as safe as possible.

We have set out detailed next steps, including 👇

✅ Bringing bus-stop bypasses up to standard
✅ Addressing cyclist behavior
✅ Improving designs
Keeping everyone travelling in the capital safe is our top priority and we’re determined to make the network as inclusive as possible.

We will continue to work with disabled people and accessibility groups to reflect on the findings of our review.

Our climate is changing. We must cut CO2 emissions, but it's also vital we adapt our city to better cope with extreme weather.

Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) cut the risk of flooding by slowing & reducing the flow of rainwater into drains & sewers.

Long geeky🧵1/6 Image
In London, we're building SuDS into our transport schemes to reduce local flooding - like this example at Old Street.

The unused subway spaces were converted and soakaway chambers installed.

After the underground space was sealed, a layer of polystormunits were installed.

I’ll be taking a break from Twitter for the next few weeks for the pre-election period, but prompted by an excellent @KuperSimon article in the @FT about the future of cities, I wanted sign off with a few reflections from a London perspective: (1/11)
The piece focussed on how the pandemic will lead to cities making better use of streets, re-thinking the vast amount of space we currently allocate to inefficient when moving, yet barely used parked cars. (2/11)
Crises such as the one we are in tend to accelerate existing trends. In London, politicians of all stripes have been wrestling with car dominance for decades now. But even in the short time I’ve been involved, this last year has seen change accelerate at warp speed. (3/11)

ICYMI THREAD: a round-up of new plans that we’ve published over the last couple of weeks. @TfL & @MayorofLondon are working hard to give people the option of walking & cycling for essential journeys, freeing up precious space on public transport & our roads for those who can't.
First up, scheme that fills the 1km gap along Tooley St between C4 at Tower Bridge Rd & the new London Bridge cycle lanes. Includes a new pedestrian space at the “Tooley St Triangle” where a superfluous slip road will be closed to cars. More details here: consultations.tfl.gov.uk/general/3269f8… ImageImage
Over the river, we’re filling the crucial gap between C2 at Aldgate and C3 at Tower Hill, with a 0.5km bi-directional track on Mansell St.

We’re reallocated one of the two general traffic lanes & retaining the bus lane. This will make the street more efficient & less polluted.
