Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s comments on Wednesday were incredibly significant and worth looking at closely.

A thread…
First, he stands firmly by the United States…

“Our ties with the United States are vital, strong, and steady.”

He acknowledges “disagreements,” but emphasizes...
“The United States was the first to stand by us … and the U.S. continues to stand by us now.”

“We solve our disagreements behind closed doors, not via interviews or tweets.”
This is as close as you’ll see to an open criticism of PM Netanyahu from within the government.

Netanyahu has gone very public in his spat with Pres Biden.
Second, Gallant says Hamas can no longer threaten Israel.

“Hamas no longer functions as a military organization-
most of its battalions have been dismantled, and it has turned to terrorist warfare.”
But the strongest comments are when he talks about who is to govern Gaza and what the “day after” looks like.

“We must dismantle Hamas’ governing capabilities in Gaza. The key to this goal is military action, and the establishment of a governing alternative in Gaza.”
Without a real plan, he says there are two options:

“Hamas rule in Gaza or Israeli military rule in Gaza.”

Both of these are unacceptable, he says. In October, he says the defense establishment was working on a plan for a “local, non-hostile Palestinian governing alternative.”
And here’s the big line —

“Since October, I have been raising this issue consistently in the Cabinet, and have received no response.”

“Unfortunately, this issue was not raised for debate and worse, an alternative was not raised in its replacement.”
This is in direct opposition to what Netanyahu said Wednesday.

First, Netanyahu dismisses talk of planning for what’s next.

“All the talk about 'the day after', while Hamas stays remains intact, will remain mere words devoid of content."
In the next line, he also says he’s been working on this “for months.”

“Contrary to what is being claimed, for months we have been engaged in various efforts to resolve this complex problem.”
Gallant calls Israeli governance in Gaza - military or civilian - a “negative and dangerous option” for Israel.

This comes as other far-right members of his government call for resettling Gaza.
And here Gallant says it bluntly:

“I must reiterate - I will not agree to the establishment of Israeli military rule in Gaza. Israel must not establish civilian rule in Gaza.”
“I call on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ... declare that Israel will not establish civilian control over the Gaza strip, that Israel will not establish military governance in the Gaza strip, and that a governing alternative to Hamas ... will be raised immediately.”
Far-right members of the government have already called for him to be fired.

Will Netanyahu fire him?
This kind of criticism would have gotten others fired in the past. But Gallant has stuck his neck out before.

In March ’23, he was the first to call to stop the judicial overhaul as the country experienced widespread protests. (Several others soon joined him.)
Gallant said the legislation had to stop “for the sake of our sons and daughters.”

Netanyahu said he was going to fire Gallant… then didn’t.

At the time, Gallant's (attempted) firing led to protests in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
But has Gallant gone too far for Netanyahu now? I hate to give a cliche answer, but we shall see!

The international condemnation of Iran's attack on Israel over the weekend is a diplomatic win when Israel needs it most.

But does Israel risk squandering that goodwill if and when it retaliates?
A lot of that depends on how Israel responds. If Israel strikes Iranian targets in Syria, that's one thing. We have seen Israel do that repeatedly without sparking a larger escalation.

Of course, that would depend on the scale of an operation like that.
For Israel to strike Iran directly is far more challenging and risks angering the countries with which Israel has overt and covert relations in the Middle East.

This would be much farther than the Osirak raid in 1981 which tested the limits of Israel's fighter jets.

The Pentagon waited four days to disclose that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin was admitted to the hospital on New Year's Day.

That delay is unacceptable, especially given his crucial position in the national security establishment and world events.

This is an administration that talked a big game about transparency, and it failed this test. This is a member of the cabinet and the leader of the US military.

He was hospitalized at a time with critical global national security issues. And yet the public knew nothing.
Past precedent says the public - and the press - should know within 24 hours when someone in such a clearly vital position is not able to fill that role.

We knew in advance when Pres. Biden transferred power to VP Harris before a colonoscopy.

Once again, PM Netanyahu is faced with demands for a prisoner exchange. The families of Hamas’ hostages met with the PM and made it clear they would consider a prisoner swap - approx. 220 Israeli hostages for 6630 Palestinian prisoners released. 1/x
"We spoke bluntly and made it clear to the Prime Minister in no uncertain terms that a comprehensive deal based on the everyone for everyone principle is a deal the families would consider and has the support of all of Israel,” said the mother of one of the hostages. 2/x
Hamas leader Yahye Sinwar - himself released as part of the prisoner exchange deal for Gilad Shalit in 2011 - said the same on Saturday. 3/x

As we follow another TFR for NORAD operations, I'm watching two aircraft over Lake Michigan - an E-3 AWACS and a tanker (which would fuel up nearby fighters).
The AWACS looks like it's in a racetrack pattern, which it could be using to keep an eye on something. The tanker flight track generally follows the winds aloft, which are going west to east.
NORAD has not said if an object was detected, if it was a radar anomaly (per Montana incident last night), or something else.

This was a fascinating story to learn about. @US_SOCEUR developed the Resistance Operating Concept (ROC) to help a country fight back against occupation.

Ukraine has become its proving ground, and other countries have noticed.

Other quotes that didn't make it into the story --

"The pain that [the Ukrainian forces] apply to the Russians by conducting resistance will have to come in the Russian calculus for other countries" - Kevin Stringer, the lead on developing the ROC
"The threat of Russia attacking - that lives in our bones from generation to generation. We used to say, 'Let them come.' They might take Tallinn, but they will die there." - Rene Toomse, Estonian Defense League

Since Russia invaded Ukraine, the US has flown its nuclear command and control aircraft more frequently, a US official told CNN, a sign that the strategic force has responded in some way.

cnn.com/europe/live-ne…
Notably, the increase in frequency of the flights occurred even before Russian President Vladimir Putin put his strategic forces, including nuclear weapons, on heightened alert.
The more frequent flights began one day before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as US officials warned the assault could begin within hours.
