Actually I do know why. Here’s the completely amoral argument for why homosexuality can’t be tolerated. Bees build hives and farm honey, wolves hunt ruminants in packs, men cooperate in groups to dominate other men and their surroundings.

In order to defeat other groups of men, in order to win, men need the desire to fuck others over, but simultaneously to not fuck their friends over. Women, whose psychology is built around being fucked, and men who want to be fucked, disrupt this dynamic.
The most sublime and beautiful emotions in the male psyche exist around loyalty to friends and victory over the enemy. If a man wants to fuck his friends, be fucked by them, or be fucked by the enemy, all of these motivating glories get poisoned and inverted…
…and the cohesion of the group, its ability to win, falls apart. The distinction between the active and passive homosexual seems relevant here, and most societies made the distinction. If one only wants to (literally) fuck the enemy, cooperation doesn’t immediately break down.
Every society that tolerated some gay quarantined male on male buttsex to a subordinate caste of catamites considered subhuman. The recipient could not participate in male society, and the “top” would be excluded if he ever took it in the ass.

Male bonding and initiation rituals are necessary for elite cohesion and cooperation. Introducing any element of homosexuality into them (and there is no inherent eroticism at all in them to a healthy man) completely destroys them via mechanism I mentioned above.
Every degree of toleration eventually destroys the society that tolerates it; it breaks quarantine sooner or later. Only the German “ergi -> swamp” successfully managed to extirpate it from northern Europe and keep it out until relatively recent times.
Anyway this is orthogonal to question about “our public sphere” which isn’t at all capable of cohesive action in the first place, but bullying the transformers is fun and reflects important instincts, it’s not moralism, so we’re not going to stop
