There are basically three stages of urban decay- first is a functional city with “some bad areas”. Second is a city that’s mostly ghetto with some acceptable areas. NOLA is in the second category. Both of these have people for criminals to prey on. The final stage of urban decay is a large no-go zone with a tiny rim of functional but lower-middle class people on the outskirts who perform the basic functions of keeping the city running. In this area, crime has lower payoffs.

Every generation complains about the “new weapons” diminishing martial valor and heroism. I can find an example from every single century of the English language’s written existence. Achilles was killed by a stray arrow. One just has to get over it. There are three historical modes of warfare that the “metagame” alternates between. All of them require elite, well-trained men devoted to war. The most personally heroic is “chariot” warfare, involving small numbers of elite troops reliant on a lot of gear.

Yes, the death of scifi/fantasy was caused by the fandom “taking ownership” of it. The original writers were all people with interesting lives whose works were all solidly rooted in an actual reality. The generation after based fantasy on fantasy and none of their works had anything interesting to say or contained anything viscerally compelling. In the 90s, you needed to have decent computer knowledge to make it onto the internet. The first “social media” was the pseudonymous public forum, a nerd’s libertarian paradise. These usually centered on particular nerdy interests. They were also almost totally text-focused. Long-form argument ruled, the sperg dominated, and interesting worldviews were shaped in the clash. One thing little known is that the Middle Ages were essentially the ancap paradise. Contract and corporate law were extremely important. For most of what we think of as “medieval times”, the peasant was just a tenant paying rent to the guy who owned the land. Marx evokes the peasant “commune”, but in reality, the commune was a legal entity that could in of itself enter into contracts, own property, and possessed rights.
